2 What is DRE? DRE is North Carolina’s Developmental English and Reading program. Students who are not “college ready” take DRE courses at the Community College.

DRE 096, 097, 098 are 3 credit hours and 8 weeks each Classes include 5 hours of lecture and 2 hours of lab per week. DRE 096 DRE 097 DRE 098 ENG 111

4 Course Overview: DRE 096: Integrated Reading and Writing I
Reading and interpreting 9th -10th grade texts Writing effective sentences and paragraphs DRE 097: Integrated Reading and Writing II Reading and interpreting 10th - 11th grade texts Writing effective paragraphs and essays DRE 098: Integrated Reading and Writing III Reading 11th -12th grade texts Writing effective essays and basic documented essays

5 NC Grading Requirements
Mastery DRE courses are Pass/Retake. Students earn a P or R at the end of the course. Mastery Grading Students must demonstrate course appropriate reading and writing mastery in their DRE course. Mastery is 80%

6 CPCC DRE Mastery Requirements:
All classes have the same requirements: Overall Course Average of 80% or above Final Reading Exam grade of 80% or above Final Writing Assignment grade of 80% or above

7 Revisions and Retakes Students have one chance to revise all formal writing assignments to enhance learning and improve their grade. Students have one chance to take an alternate version of the reading tests (including the final exam) if they earn below an 80% on the initial test.

9 Teaching Methodologies
Incorporate technology Individualized instruction Short, efficient lectures Active learning (pairs, groups, etc.) Contextualized for college/career readiness Grammar in context during lecture or in isolation during lab Integrated Reading and Writing Cycle (see next slide) Course competencies require the use of an appropriate word processing program to produce written assignments.
