Interview Preparation Know thyself. Research prospective employers. Prepare and rehearse standard questions.

Interview Preparation 1) Know Thyself Determine your most marketable skills: –Technical –General –Key character traits List your competences, qualifications, and experiences. Know your goals, plans, and mission. Know the kind of job you want (and the kind you don’t).

Interview Preparation 2) Research Employers Develop a research strategy. Conduct basic company research: –Read Annual Report. –Conduct Internet search. –Talk to past or present employees and interns. –Use Public Library services. Learn the company’s culture and values. Find out who will interview you. Understand the job description and requirements.

Interview Preparation 3) Prepare and Rehearse Standard Questions You should not be surprised by a standard question. –Typical icebreaker: “Tell me about yourself”. Practice your Q&A’s (role-playing or mock interviews). Think of two or three difficult questions you could be asked and be prepared to answer them. Practice your “30-second commercial”.

“30-second Commercial” I am (name, profession, and level)… …with expertise in (list functions). My strengths include… List particular accomplishments or distinctions relevant to the opening. I have worked for (types of organizations or industries)… My plans are (state career objective)…

Ten Commonly Asked Questions Tell me about yourself. Where do you expect to be in five years? What do you know about our organization? What do you look for in a job? Why are you leaving your present position? What did you like the most about your last job? Least? What have been your most important career accomplishments? How would you describe your leadership style? Describe a typical day in your job. Why should we hire you?

During the Interview (Interviewing Tips) Relax. It’s all about having a good attitude! Establish rapport. Be a good listener. Keep the conversation flowing without monopolizing it. Put the best spin on the truth – never lie! Tell a story. Project optimism.

Exercise with Audience Participation (The 30-Second Commercial)

“30-second Commercial” I am (name, profession, and level)… …with expertise in (list functions). My strengths include… Particular accomplishments or distinctions relevant to the opening. I have worked for (types of organizations or industries)… My plans are (state career objective)…

Show Me! (Mock Interview Example)

Ending the Interview Ask questions. Provide any relevant information about yourself that may not have been covered. Restate your strengths and express interest. Ask to exchange business cards. Establish interviewer’s timetable. Do not ask if you’re seriously being considered for the job.

After the Interview Write a thank-you note promptly. Write an interview report for your own benefit as soon as possible. Continue your job search while you wait. If turned down, ask for feedback.
