Types of Reactions. There are so many different reactions that happen inside and outside the human body that chemists have tried to organize them into.
EQUATIONS Coefficients- 1. The big numbers in front of the compounds and/or elements in a chemical reaction. 2. Represent the number of moles of that compound.

Reaction Types!

Five Basic Types of Reactions –Synthesis –Decomposition –Single Replacement –Double Replacement –Combustion (very special reactions)

#1 Synthesis Reactions lTlTwo or more reactants combine to make one product Chemical Examples! Cu + O 2  CuO H 2 + O 2  H 2 O G eneral: A + B  AB

#2 Decomposition Reactions l decompose --- “to break down” l one reactant breaks down into two or more simpler products. l Examples: –NaCl  Na + Cl 2 –CaCO 3  CaO + CO 2 l General: AB  A + B

#3 Single Replacement l One free element replaces another element in a compound! l Analogy- “getting dumped” l Examples: –Na + KCl  K + NaCl –Li + Mg(OH) 2  Mg + Li(OH) l General: A + BC  B + AC

#4 Double Replacement l Two elements switch partners. l Analogy – Wife Swap l Example: –MgCl 2 + NaBr  NaCl + MgBr 2 –Na(OH) + H 2 SO 4  NaSO 4 + H(OH) l General: AB + CD  AD + CB

What type are these?? l H 2 + O 2  H 2 O l H 2 O  H 2 + O 2 l Zn + H 2 (SO 4 )  Zn(SO 4 ) + H 2 l HgO  Hg +O 2 l KBr +Cl 2  KCl + Br 2 l Ag(NO 3 ) + NaCl  AgCl + Na(NO 3 ) l Mg(OH) 2 + H 2 (SO 3 )  Mg(SO 3 ) + H 2 O Note: H 2 O = H(OH)

#5 Combustion lAlA hydrocarbon (compound composed of Hydrogen & Carbon) reacts with oxygen (usually from the air) (Most people call this process Burning!) lIlIf combustion is complete, products will be CO 2 and H 2 O. lIlIf combustion is incomplete, products will be CO and H 2 O.

Examples l C 4 H 10 + O 2  CO 2 + H 2 O (complete - good!) l Balanced or skeletal? l 2C 4 H O 2  8CO H 2 O

Examples l C 8 H 8 +O 2  CO + H 2 O (Incomplete-Bad!) l Balanced or skeletal? l C 8 H 8 + 6O 2  8CO + 4H 2 O l General: C x H y + O 2  CO + H 2 O l General: C x H y + O 2  CO 2 + H 2 O
