Photograph Challenge task What is unique about Manchester? Use a digital camera to take images that show this uniqueness. You cannot take pictures of people, buildings or vehicles! Think carefully about what is unique about Manchester

1. DANGER! As you are walking around this area, for a 100m stretch, identify all the hazards you come across. Think about different people using the environment e.g. Buggies, wheelchairs, blind people etc. How could this environment be made more user-friendly?

2. Visiting from Space! You have just arrived here from outer space and you have no idea where you are. What visual, non-verbal clues would tell you: – Which country you are in? – Which town you are in?

3. Colourful landscapes Using a pencil make a simple sketch of this area (outlines only). Colour it with the colours you think best represent the landscape. Why did you choose those colours? Think carefully before you colour in!

4. Safety How safe is this area? Is it different for different people? What is there in the area to make people feel safe? What makes this area feel dangerous? What evidence of crime is there in this area? Do you think your perception of safety will change with the time of day?

5. Sound Mapping Close your eyes and listen to the noises in the environment. Which is most dominant, the one you hear before all others? What do you hear next? What does this tell you about this environment? You could record the noises on your mobile phone. Try to create a sound map – start from a central point on your page and draw a line in the direction of each sound, thicker for louder sounds. Add a key to differentiate between sounds.

6. Homeless Imagine you are homeless. Identify a suitable place in the environment where you will sleep tonight. Why did you choose that place?

7. Wordscapes Produce a wordscape of this area. Use a piece of paper and add words that describe this place – think carefully about where you place the words, how you write them, the colours you use, their size etc. Your page must contain only words but must look like the place around you. 8. Signs How well signposted is this area? How could it be improved?

9. Tokens Go on a short journey around the area. As you go collect items that represent your journey. How will you remember the order? Which items will you choose?

10. Landscape Enhancement Identify ways this landscape has been enhanced. Why was this done? How effective is it? Could the landscape be better enhanced through another means?

11. Cultural Geography How many different cultures are reflected in the urban fabric of this area? How are they represented?

12. Conservation What three features of this area would you most like to see conserved and why? How could they be conserved?

13. Favourites Which is your favourite building on the street? Which is your least favourite? Is the street a coherent environment? Does the range of buildings make sense and fit the environment? If you could change one building, which would it be? Why? How would you change it?

14. Business Find 10 commercial activities in the local area. Which are local businesses? Which belong to a regional or national group? Which are transnational? What is the overall economic landscape of the local area?

15. 10,000 How might the view in front of you have looked: a.10,000 years ago? b.100 years ago? c.10 years ago? You can write or draw your responses.

16. Urban Rambling Walk around the area, think carefully about the decisions you make about where to walk. Plot your route on a map. How would you change this place to make it more attractive for urban ramblers like yourselves?

17. Senses Use your five senses to describe what this area is like. What does it smell like? Taste like? Sound like? Look like? Feel like?

18. Advertising Use the camera or a mobile phone to record a thirty second advert for the local area. Decide who your target audience is and advertise accordingly.

19. Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going? Choose one person in the local area. Decide who they are, name, age, occupation etc. Why are they in this place? Where have they come from? Where are they going to? How do you know without speaking to them?

20. Postcards Draw an image that represents this place on one side of a piece of paper. On the other side write a postcard imagining you are either a local person or a visitor to this area.

21. Picture this place Use the camera to portray this area as you see it, choose images that make it look appealing. Alternatively, choose images that create an impression of an area in need of regeneration of some kind.

22. In the past Choose a location in the local area that evidently has undergone change. Draw a postcard that shows this area in the past - what was it like? Write a postcard from this site in the past.

23. All change What three features of this landscape would you most like to change? Why? How?
