How we support students in the School A wide range of staff across the University are able and available to help you throughout your time at University. Within the School of Materials, if you have any problems, your key contacts are: –your Programme Director –Professional Support Service Staff –any member of staff you feel comfortable talking to. Please do talk to someone if you have any problems. We can only help when we know there is an issue.

If you do not get a response from someone rather than let things build up waiting for a response please contact the appropriate Undergraduate Director or Chair of the School Teaching Committee. They are happy to help where they can. Mitigation

If you have experienced problems that you feel may have affected your performance in examinations and assessed coursework these can be considered by the School of Materials Mitigation Committee who may be able to make recommendations to Examination Boards. You must however have independent documentary evidence to back up any application for mitigation – documentary evidence accepted includes medical certificates, doctors’ letters, letters from the University Counselling Service, solicitors’ letters and death certificates as appropriate. It is your responsibility to submit any claim and to ensure you have documentary evidence.

Interruptions In certain cases it may be appropriate for you to seek an interruption from your studies for a year. While there is no guarantee that any application for interruption will be approved the School takes a sympathetic approach to all applications.

Accessing forms and other information For more information on mitigation look at the School intranet where you can access the UG Handbook and the forms you require. If you cannot find the information you need there then go to a School office where you should be able to get a hard copy of any form.

Frequently asked questions Where can I find my timetable? Where do I go for labs? Can I transfer to another programme?

Where can I find my timetable? You should have been given a hard copy of your timetable. If not Textiles timetables are on the noticeboard outside C58. Timetables for both Materials Science and Textiles are also accessible on the intranet. –You will have to scroll down to the appropriate timetable for your programme and year.

Where do I go for labs? For Textiles students there are notices up with lab groups and details of days and dates your group should attend. You will not attend all the labs on your timetable.

Can I transfer to another programme? You may be able to BUT you cannot transfer into a programme that is full. To be able to transfer you have to talk to the Programme Director of the programme you want to transfer to to establish whether or not there is a place available. If there is you then have to talk to the Programme Director of the programme you are currently registered on. You need to fill in a transfer form (available from School offices) and get it signed by both accepting PD and releasing CD. Completed form needs to be given into a School Office.

Can I move to another hall of residence? If you are really unhappy with the room or hall you have been allocated, from the start of October you will be able to enter into the transfer process. You can download a transfer form from the web. Please remember: Completing a transfer form does not guarantee that the Accommodation Office will be able to find you a new room. As with applications, demand for some halls is very high, which means the process may take longer for one person than another.

Transferring hall Cases will be prioritised according to need. You must have approval from your Warden before a transfer can be completed. You may receive a cleaning fee if your room is not left in an acceptable condition. The Accommodation Office will contact you when a suitable vacancy arises.
