MEDICINAL MEDICATION FOR THE MIND & BODY Presented By CJ Pickering Live Your Best Life "The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well." - Hippocrates

Agenda  What is mind-body medicine?  Why you should know more about it?  The history of mind-body medicine?  Mind-body techniques  What is mind-body medicine used for?

What is Mind-Body Medicine?  According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), mind-body medicine "uses a variety of techniques designed to enhance the mind's capacity to affect bodily function and symptoms“ ( 2012).  The focal point of mind-body medicine is on intervention strategies such as: relation techniques, visual imagery, tai chi, qi gong, hypnosis, and cognitive- behavioral therapy.

Why YOU Should Know More About Mind-Body Medicine  Mind- body medicine approaches the healing process from the inside out.

History of Mind-Body Medicine I  The practice dates back to ancient times  It is a huge part of the healing practices of Ayurvedic Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) - strongly believe in connection between mind- body

History of Mind-Body Medicine II  1960S and 1970s – physician Herbert Benson, studied how meditation can affect blood pressure - coined term “relaxation response”  Present day – ancient traditions are being renewed - yoga, meditation - being taught more widely at medical schools throughout US and abroad

Mind-Body Techniques  Biofeedback- focuses on training people to control certain bodily functions (ie heart rate and blood pressure) - person watches a monitor that provides feedback on bodily functions

Types Of Meditation Part III…  Taoist Meditation focuses on the natural flow of the breath in and out of nostrils and the expansion and contraction of the abdomen.  It is a great way to increase focused awareness

Types Of Meditation Part IV…  Mindfulness Meditation  The next time you eat a meal think about.. - why you are eating it? - what does each bit taste, feel, and smell like? - how does it make your body feel? - what thoughts are you thinking about?

Types Of Meditation Part V…  Buddhist Meditation -Teaches the practitioner how to have complete control over his/her mind -Brings the mind, body, and soul into complete balance

Types Of Meditation Part VI… Vipassana Meditation  Buddha also discovered and taught another type of meditation thousands of years ago. It is called vipassana meditation.  Vipassana Meditation - is taught as a way to cleanse impurities and toxins in body - heals mind/body - vipassana means “to see things clearly” - to benefit from utmost level of purification and reflection, strongly suggested to perform with professional assistance

What Is All of This Good For?...  Asthma  Anxiety  Depression  Diabetes  Obesity  Heart Disease  High Blood Pressure  Stomach and Intestinal problems (constipation, diarrhea, etc.)  Insomnia  Pain and Vomiting (from chemotherapy)

Reflection…  We feed, nourish, and stimulate our bodies with food and exercise.  We recharge the mind/body with sleep and rest.  These things and much more are imperative to not only staying alive but living fully.  It is just as equally important to feed, nourish, stimulate, and recharge our mind-body-spirit connection.  So start in the present moment with some medicinal medication for your mind-body-spirit connection.
