Communication Networks (Kommunikationsnetværk) Specialisations: Distributed Application Engineering Network Planning & Management Ole Brun Madsen Professor Henrik Schiøler Associate Professor Ramjee Prasad Professor Institute of Electronic Systems

Objectives: to give the students knowledge about and understanding of analysis and design of modern communication networks to make it possible for the student to apply classic as well as advanced methods and theories in analysis, design, validity control and test of modern communication systems. The line communication networks consists of two semesters which covers wireless and stationary communication technology. The line supports the specialisations within: Distributed Application Engineering Network Planning and Management. Communication Networks

Project Unit Description for 6th semester - Communication Networks Theme: Basic Wireless Communication Technology Objective: To obtain knowledge about basic wireless communication systems To obtain knowledge about the qualities of present wireless communication principles To be able to use methods and theories for analysis and design of functional wireless communication systems. Communication Networks 6th semester

Content: The project work is based on a specific problem where wireless communication technology gives a possible solution. The problem is analysed according to communication needs including quality service. A number of wireless communication technologies are compared with the identified needs and a technology is chosen for further processing. As a solution to the problem a distribution system is designed based on the wireless communication technology chosen for the purpose. A small number of elements are implemented, enough to be able to demonstrate the abilities of the established communication facilities. Tests are carried out at module system level and accept tests are partly specified. The project work has to cover practical wireless communication, fixed systems, system/SW analysis and design, real time aspects and tests. In the wireless communication you use a completed module which is able to communicate with a fixed control system. Communication Networks 6th semester

Courses: There are courses within wireless communication systems and stationary systems. Examination: The examination is assessed as an oral exam with the participation of an internal examiner. The exam is based on the report made by the student. Each student is given an individual mark in accordance with the Danish 13 marking scale. Communication Networks 6th semester

Project Unit description for 7th semester - Communication Networks Theme: Basic Stationary Communication Technology. Objective: To obtain knowledge about basic wired telecommunication technologies To obtain knowledge about the qualities of present wired communication protocols To be able to use methods and theories for analysis and design of functional wired communication systems. Communication Networks 7th semester

Content: The project work is based on a specific problem where wired communication technology gives a possible solution. The problem is analysed according to communication needs including service quality. A number of stationary communication protocols are compared with the identified needs and some are chosen for further processing. As a solution to the problem a distribution system is designed based on the communication protocols chosen. A small number of elements are implemented, enough to be able to demonstrate the abilities of the established communication facilities. Tests are carried out at module system level and accept tests are partly specified. The project work has to cover practical wired network protocols, network programming, distributed real time systems, systems/SW analysis and design, real time aspects and tests. Communication Networks 7th semester

Courses: There are courses within stationary communication systems and distributed systems. Examinations: The examination is assessed as an oral exam with the participation of an internal examiner. The exam is based on a report which is assessed as passed/not passed. Communication Networks 7th semester

The Distributed Application Engineering specialisation aims to provide students with knowledge and understanding of distribution methodologies and their impact on system availabillity, performance and reliabillity. The Distributed Application Engineering specialisation comprises three semesters covering network management and distributed real time systems application engineering. The specialisation is supported by Comunication Networks Informatics Tele Communications Process Control lines Distributed Application Engineering

The Network Planning and Management specialisation aims to provide students with knowledge and understanding of management and planning methodologies for communication networks. The Network Planning and Management specialisation comprises three semesters covering network planning and management. The specialisation is supported by Communication Networks Informatics Tele Communications Process Control lines Network Planning & Management

Theme: Network management. PERIOD: 1 February - 30 June. OBJECTIVE: To provide knowledge of network management methodologies within telecommunication systems in general. To provide understanding of how existing policies influence the efficiency and service profile of telecommunication systems. To enable student to analyse and design functioning management systems for communication purposes. 8. Semester: Distributed Application Engineering Network Planning and Management

CONTENTS: Project work is based on an existing communication system, where efficiency may be improved by better network management. The communication system is analysed with respect to capacity, user profiles, required quality of service and existing network management policies. Ideas for improved network management are presented and some are selected for further investigation. A simulation system is designed and implemented on which the selected management policy is implemented and tested. If possible the selected management system is tested on the real life communication system. Simulation/Test results are given proper statistical treatment and conclusions are made with respect to improvement and statistical significance. 8. Semester: Distributed Application Engineering Network Planning and Management

Courses: F8-1 Engineering Responsibilities FP8-4 Neurale netværk og fuzzy logik CN8-1 Network Management CN8-2 Traffic analysis 1 FP8-11 Graph Theory FP8-6 Kommunikationssystemer 2 FP8-10 Ræssonnerende og selvlærende systemer FP8-24 Human Computer Interaction og Multimodale brugergrænseflader 8. Semester: Distributed Application Engineering Network Planning and Management

OBJECTIVE: To provide knowledge and understanding of analysis and design methodologies of distributed real time systems. To provide understanding of the importance of reliable temporal behaviour in dependable systems. CONTENTS: Project work is based on a general problem, where distributed real time systems provide possible solutions. The problem is analysed w.r.t. communication needs and associated quality of service aspects. A number of communication technologies and architectures are compared to the needs identified and some are selected among those for further treatment. A distributed real system is designed as a solution to the problem based on the selected technology and architecture. A number of elements, sufficient to demonstrate the virtues of the designed system, are implemented. Test is performed at module and system levels and acceptance testing is partly specified. At every relevant level temporal behaviour and reliability should be tested. 9. Semester: Distributed Application Engineering
