Glasgow ATLAS physics meeting intro Craig Buttar 19-Feb-06

ATLAS Physics meetings Dates of meetings (Rm506) –Wed 15 th Feb –Wed 15 th Mar –Wed 5 th Apr –Wed 3 rd May –Wed 14 th June Agenda –Focus on several topics, maybe theoretical (Glasgow PPT invited) –Review progress of physics studies and analysis –Find out about software status at Glasgow and other software issues –Share problems and ideas

Agenda Brief survey of current work –Introduction –Jet studies (Dan) –Jet reconstruction (Sasha) –H (Catherine) –H WW (Rick) –ttH (Christian) –Comparator (Chris) –Software status (Stan)

ATLAS programme 2007 –LHC: first collisions mid-07 l=10 30 cm -2 s -1, L~10pb -1 –EW rates still significant: ~10 5 Zs, 10 6 Ws, 10 5 tt, 10 7 jets –Commission detector Lepton reconstruction JES from Ws from top 2008 –First physics data, l= cm -2 s -1 –Commissioning –L~0.5fb -1 of good data 2009 –First Higgs results? l=10 33 cm -2 s -1, L~10fb -1

Rates Processσ (nb)Ns -1 Events/year ( L = 10 fb -1 ) W e ν 15 ~ 10 8 Z e + e 1.5 ~ 10 7 tt 0.8 ~ 10 7 Inclusive jets p T > 200 GeV 100 ~ 10 9 Rates of typical SM processes W-mass, t-mass, PDFs etc Commissioning the detector Lepton reconstruction, jet energy scale Higgs 5 discovery lumi From ATL-PHYS Discovery reach dominated By H WW but LEP region Is problematic! End 2009 Mid 2009

What channels H (qq)WW (2009?) –Strong discovery channel –Should we also look at ? ttH (2010) –Not a discovery channel, but vital in this mass range, also important to look at couplings What do we need to know? Leptons –Triggering efficiency –Isolated lepton reconstruction (what about overlapping leptons!) Look at W+Zs Jets –Optimum jet reconstruction in a complex environment –b-tagging –Central jet veto –Jet energy scale Jet reconstruction and top studies
