Presentation transcript:

Basic Structure 3 Year BSc Single Honours  Single Honours: 3 year degree 120 credits of modules in each year; Modules are 20, 15 or 10 credits; 60 credits (usually) each Semester: Semester 1 Sept-Jan, Semester 2 Jan-June.  1st Year 100 Credits of Compulsory modules (100/120 = 5/6); 20 Credits of Choice, perhaps more Maths, or 'any' other topic.  2 nd Year Essentially 120 Credits of Compulsory modules Possibility of replacing 20 Credits with study in other Schools.  3 rd Year Choose from a wide variety of modules offered by Maths & Stats; 20 Credits of study in other Schools allowed.

Compulsory modules at Stage 1  Stage 1 Single Honours (3 and 4 Year) Compulsory and Core (100 credits) MethodsMAS1601(15, S1) Introduction to Calculus Methods MAS1602(15, S1) Introductory Algebra: Complex Numbers, Vectors and Matrices AppliedMAS1603(15, S2) Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations StatisticsMAS1604(15, S2) Probability and Statistics Pure MAS1701(10, S1) + MAS1702(10, S2) Sets and Counting; Number Systems Problem Solving MAS1801(10, S1) + MAS1802 (10, S2)  These modules assume only the 'common core' of A-level Mathematics. They are taken by all Maths and Statistics single honours students. Financial Maths, Mathematics with Finance and Maths/Financial Maths with Management take all the modules except the two Problem Solving modules.

Optional MAS modules at Stage 1  Stage 1 excluding Major/Minor degree  Optional (2 x 10 of 120 credits) MAS1901 (10+0) Optimisation with Constraints MAS1902 (0+10)Dynamics  These modules are not compulsory, but we do recommend them. (last year almost all students took all of the optional modules).

non-MAS modules at Stage 1  Reminder: of your 120 credits 100 are Compulsory MAS modules You can take both, one or none of the extra MAS modules  The University rules allow you to take any other modules!  Subject to: the timetable allowing it the module leader/DPD accepting you (A level, module full)  Can be changed in first 2 – 3 weeks (DPD Request Form)  The popular choices are those which occur in degree combinations with Maths and Stats: Accounting, Business Studies, Psychology, Economics

Stage 1 Major/Minor  Stage 1 Major/Minor Mathematics with Management Financial Mathematics with Management Financial Mathematics Mathematics with Finance  80 credits of Mathematics (MAS1601,MAS1602, MAS1603, MAS1604, MAS1701, MAS1702)  and 40 from the minor choice. All modules are compulsory and core, except for ACC1000 for the ‘with Management’ students.

Major-minor Degree modules  Financial Maths (GN13) Mathematics with Finance (G1N3) ACC1010 (10+10) Introduction to Financial Accounting; (Core) ACC1011 (10 +10) Introduction to Management Accounting and Finance. (Core)

4 Year Integrated Masters MMath  MMath/MMathStat Hons - 4 year degree Master of Mathematics (G103) - MMath Master of Mathematics & Statistics (GGC3) – MMathStat 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd year are very similar to 3 year BSc degree.  4 th year  Project Includes: Dissertation, Poster & Presentation Possibility to interact with world-leading researchers in hot research topics of your choice! Examples of recent projects: “Statistical Models for the Prediction of Football Matches” “Methods of constructing algorithms for quantum computers” “Supernova stars and interstellar turbulence”  Advanced Modules

Degree Code Summary  3 year degree (BSc Hons) Mathematics (G100)  Mathematics & Statistics (GG13),  Statistics (G300)  4 year degree (MMath/MMathStat Hons) Master of Mathematics (G103) - MMath Master of Mathematics & Statistics (GGC3) – MMathStat  Major/Minor Degrees (3 years) Mathematics with Management (G1N2) Mathematics with Finance (G1N3) Financial Mathematics (GN13) Financial Mathematics with Management (G1NF)
