Eclipse – occurs when the shadow of one celestial body falls on another.

Lunar eclipse - happens when the Moon passes through the shadow of the Earth.

Lunar Eclipses During a lunar eclipse the moon can look red. Lunar eclipses can occur only at full moon. Everybody on the night side of the Earth can see the lunar eclipse.

Solar eclipse - happens when the Moon comes between the Earth and the sun.

Solar eclipses Solar eclipses can occur only at new moon. Only people in the shadow can see the eclipse.

Solar Eclipse

Solar Eclipse from the Moon

Ecliptic plane SunEarth Moon Moon’s orbital plane Why don’t we see solar and lunar eclipses every month? The Moon’s orbit around Earth is inclined about 5 degrees to Earth’s plane of orbit around the Sun.

OUT: During which moon phase does a solar eclipse occur?
