3. The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite and the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System. The average centre- to-centre distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,403 kilometers (238,857 mi), about thirty times the diameter of the Earth.

4. The Moon makes a complete orbit around the Earth every 27.3 days (the orbital period), and the periodic variations in the geometry of the Earth–Moon–Sun system are responsible for the phases of the Moon, which repeat every 29.5 days.

5. An eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when one celestial object moves into the shadow of another. Eclipses can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are all in a straight line. ECLIPSES

6. Solar eclipses occur near a new Moon, when the Moon is between the Sun and Earth. In contrast, Lunar eclipses occur near a full Moon, when the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon.

7. Because the Moon's orbit around the Earth is inclined by about 5° with respect to the orbit of the Earth around the Sun, eclipses do not occur at every full and new Moon. For an eclipse to occur, the Moon must be near the intersection of the two orbital planes.
