Stimulating Young Scientists for Quality Research in South Asia Naima Ansar Khan Research Officer Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS)

Topics to be Discussed  Rationale of this topic  Problems and challenges of quality research in South Asia  Support to young scientists from IFS  BCAS and IFS collaborative actions for quality research: A successful Case study  Weakness and opportunities of quality research

Problems and challenges of quality research in South Asia A big community of scientists in South Asia However there exist a lacking in scientific contribution from young generation Lack of resources, guidance and initiative

Supports to young scientists from IFS IFS circulate their call for proposals twice a year Scientific body scrutinize proposals and provide awards Capacity building supports from IFS 1. Providing funds for scientific research 2. Providing training to acquire scientific grants and follow up activities like manuscript preparation etc

BCAS and IFS collaborative actions for quality research BCAS in association with IFS organized both national and international hands on training on: Development of Scientific Methodology Development of Grant Applications for scientific research Development of Scientific Manuscripts for Publication

Geographical location of project implemented area Project implemented Countries among South Asia Coordinator of South Asia Map Legend Project implemented region among the South and South East Asia

Activity-wise outcomes Activity Outcome Indicators Introduction and Orientation of IFS Small grant Program at Potential Research/Academic Institutions 10 Research and academic institutions were mobilized to apply for IFS Grant IFS-BCAS Training Workshop: How to develop Grant Applications for a scientific proposal (two events) 60 researchers were identified for IFS grant applications through two workshops

Activity-wise outcomes Activity Outcome IFS-BCAS Review Workshop: GA improvement and Manuscripts Development Number of Grant Awards: Approximately 30 participants Research Dissemination Workshop  New knowledge  Building capacity  IFS grantees presenting research findings

Example of a successful case of IFS grant Application of GIS and RS techniques including Crop-Wat, DSSAT and HEC-RAS model Title : Analysis of geo-morphological structure at lower Bakkhali river, Cox's Bazar as a means to evolve at suitable option for sustainable water management (SWM) Objectives: To investigate the geo-morphological changes of lower Bakkhali river following the establishment of rubber dam To develop a sustainable water utilization matrix considering potential water requirement for agricultural irrigation utilizing multi-criteria analysis.

Data needs For detecting changes: Satellite images Hydrological parameters For developing sustainable water utilizing matrix: Land-use change data Both weather and climatic data Soil parameters Crop parameters Crop calendar etc Example of one successful case over the period of 12 years

A few results Example of one successful case Situation in 2003 Situation in 2008 Situation in 1996 Change detection in the Downstream of Bakkhali river over the period of 12 years
