MS I Certificate in Internet Computing Elias Houstis Professor Aditya P. Mathur Professor and Associate Head Department of Computer Sciences Purdue University

MS I 2 What is Internet Computing? n Internet Computing includes all forms of computation, and the hardware and software needed to perform it, with a significant use of the Internet n Examples: On-line auctions, on-line banking, and distance education n Sample Technologies for Internet Computing: Networks, databases, CORBA/COM, and many software systems

MS I 3 What is Internet Computing? n Electronic Commerce is a business that relies heavily on Internet Computing n Distributed commercial establishments that rely on the Internet for their day-to- day business activities engage in Internet Computing

MS I 4 Proposal ECE CS Management Establish an Interdisciplinary Certificate program in Internet Computing (CIC) starting in the fall of 2000.

MS I 5 Objectives of CIC To educate students in the principles, technology, and skills necessary to initiate, maintain, or upgrade an infrastructure needed to realize an Internet Business that makes use of Internet Computing.

MS I 6 Who Benefits from CIC? n Late or mid-career scientists and engineers n Students interested in careers in Electronic Commerce and other forms of Internet Business

MS I 7 Required Background n An undergraduate degree in CS, any Engineering discipline, Management, or any Science discipline. n Must be proficient in: Programming in Java or C++, Data StructuresProgramming in Java or C++, Data Structures n Must have a good knowledge of: Database designDatabase design Networking fundamentalsNetworking fundamentals Internet technology: HTML, Browsers, JavaScriptInternet technology: HTML, Browsers, JavaScript
