Presentation transcript:

Keep you active while reading and listening! The active mind learns…..and the mind that learns, thrives! Notes…….

1. Don't write everything down that you read or hear. Be alert and attentive to the main points. 2. Notes should consist of key words or very short sentences. 3. Don't take notes just to be taking notes! Take notes that will be of real value to you when you look over them again later. 4. Don't worry about missing a point. 5. Shortly after making your notes, go back and rework (not redo) your notes by adding extra points and spelling out unclear items. Write questions that you want to ask the next day! 6. Review your notes regularly. This is the only way to achieve lasting memory.

1. Date your notes 2. Label your notes with a heading 3. Add titles and subtitles when you move onto a new topic for easy referencing 4. Start each new lecture/chapter on a new page 5. Write on one side of the paper 6. Skip lines, leave plenty of extra space 7. Take good care of your notes 8. Write legibly

1. Read a paragraph or two at a time. 2. Identify and restate briefly in your own words the main idea of each section. 3. Label each heading and subheading to be used in conjunction with an outline system of note taking. 4. Underlining is the least helpful, highlighting for that matter is too! 5. Summarize in the bottom margin the significant ideas on that page. 6. Review notes immediately after completing the reading.

1. Determine why what the speaker is saying is important to you. 2. Take responsibility for what is being said. 3. If you can't hear, arrange things so you can. 4. Listen to what the speaker is saying. 5. Look for the speaker's pattern of organization. 6. Listen for verbal clues. 7. Look for non-verbal clues. 8. Look for the main idea and major details of the presentation. 9. Don't let your mind wander.

 This style is great for textbooks or lectures  Combines notes with a study aid  Provides opportunity for reflection

 Note taking area is for recording the information. Use an outline method to record information. Make sure to leave a lot of space between main ideas.  Cue Column is used when you review the information in your notes. Write down key words or information that would “cue” your memory. This is an excellent place to write study questions!  Summary section is used to recap, in your own words, the main points from the page.
