What does it mean to be an Orphan? Many people feel orphaned at different times in their lives; however, there is a vast difference between feeling like an orphan and being orphaned - abandoned. An orphan is a child who has lost both its parents because of death or bereft of both their care; the child has no parents regardless of the circumstances, the child is an orphan.

“orphan” “maternal orphan” “paternal orphan” “double orphan”

The Facts on Today's Orphan Crisis: nearly 144 million children across the world nearly 144 million children across the world are orphans; are orphans; 87.6 million Orphans live in Asia; 43.4 million Orphans live in Sub-Saharan Africa; 12.4 million Orphans live in Latin America and the Caribbean; 854 million people do not have enough to eat – more than the populations of USA, Canada and the European Union;

There are different strategies to assist orphans and vulnerable children in the context of poverty: to strengthen and support the capacity of families to protect and care for their children; to mobilize and strengthen community based responses; to strengthen the capacity of children and young people to meet their own needs; to ensure that governments protect the most vulnerable children and provide essential services; to create an enabling environment for poor children and families.
