Green Impact – reaching Silver Health, Sport and Bioscience – SMT Meeting 7 December 2011 Krys Gunton School Administrator HSB Claire Mansfield School Administrator HSB Sarah Ettlinger Green Impact Officer Facilities

What is Green Impact? Staff in UEL departments take steps to reduce their own environmental impact. Online workbook: practical actions to encourage good practices and improve bad practices. Departments work at their own pace, at their own level of commitment with their own priorities and are then independently audited by students. Green Impact is a national project across 47 universities with EAUC and NUS / 2012 is UEL’s second year with Green Impact.

Project Aims Empower staff to green working practices. Bottom-up scheme – led by keen individuals. Cross-campus connections – other staff, students, departments. Have fun!

Benefits Make your department greener and contribute to reducing UEL’s environmental impact. Get challenged in a different area of work. Recognition for good work team already does and sense of achievement. Team-building – competitive spirit! Save money – on purchasing, energy bills and waste disposal

Online workbook to tick off criteria in 8 categories required to achieve Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates: Each criteria is clear, and easy to implement. The Environment Team provides support to complete the workbook and share best practice across departments. Workbooks Waste – reducing / reusing / recycling Water Travel Energy – Awareness / heating / lighting / other equipment / audits Procurement Teams, action plans, and communications. Biodiversity and community Wider communications

2010 / UEL 10 departments with 471 staff 72 staff directly involved 86 actions completed due to Green Impact.

HSB Admin Team Took part last year – received a fantastic Bronze, 1 st award. Gained 120 points and completed 30 criteria from the workbook, including: Made double-sided copying default and provided information for other paper-saving options. Ensured all hot drinks in the department are Fairtrade, which meant switching suppliers for some. Promoted cycle scheme and interest-free travelcard loans. Made reusable cups and glasses available to all visitors. Introduced scrap paper boxes and clearly labelled recycling bins.

So, why SMT? The HSB Admin team are aiming for a Silver award this year. Silver criteria require more input and sign-off from SMT. 41 out of 100 points are for ‘green teams, action plans and communications’ criteria.

So, why SMT? Include environmental aspects in new staff inductions and handbooks. Write an environmental policy for HSB, to be signed off by SMT. Sustainable travel – reduce domestic air travel. Sustainable food – focus on local, seasonal and vegetarian choices Incorporate environmental aspects into long-term strategy and plans. Action Plan from energy audit signed off by SMT.

Timeline October – Teams recruited, signed up and work started on workbooks. March 21, 5 pm – Workbooks submitted. Last week of March – Auditors trained and audits carried out. May – Awards and Celebration! Year 3 – Register again and do even better!

Any questions? Thank you!
