Choose the Right Type of Tutorial Tutorials comes in many forms, from very brief ones to full-scale manuals and occurs both in print and online media Types of Tutorials  The Guided Tour  The Demonstration  The Quick Start  The Guide Explorations  The Instruction Manual 4

The Guided Tour Presents and overview of all the program features Focuses on the entire program’s main features and user actions. This is mainly for beginning and intermediate users. The guided tour can occur online and in printed form Printed guided tour consist of a booklet or section highlighting the program prominent features Online guided tours can consist of screens and message boxes explaining the prominent and useful features of the program 5

The Guided Tour (Continue…) Some guided tours can include sound and animated cartoon figures superimposed on the screen that act as tour guide to the program 6

The Demonstration Focuses on specific features and user actions It is designed when required to illustrate some specific part of program that emphasize a real world application of a program This is mainly for beginning and intermediate users The demonstration can be in printed and online form In printed form, the tutorial instructs the user in starting the program and tell the user what commands to use to perform the demonstration procedure 7

The Demonstration (Continue…) Online demonstration shows the procedures, allow to choose which procedure to see, demonstration can be linked to help system via a button 8

The Quick Start Focuses on basic features and applications. This is mainly for intermediate and advanced users with domain knowledge who want to get going with a program or want to explore They involve significant user interaction with the program itself like starting the OS, inserting the disk, installing the program and then starting the program and executing basic functions The quick start tutorials consist of one page or folded cards and booklets that explain how the start the program and list a sampling of commands 9

The Guided Exploration Focuses on user actions and examples Consists of a special well-researched form of tutorial based on the idea that user need to control the learning experience This is mainly for beginning and intermediate users. Like demonstration, it may use a limited version of the program but some features blocked so the user can’t make serious mistakes Usually take the form of short tutorial manual. They may or may not provide scenarios 10

The Guided Exploration (Continue…) They includes objectives and summaries to help give the user directions This allow users to explore functions and commands that relate specifically to his/her needs 11

The Instruction Manual Useful for technically difficult software Focuses on users who intended to operate a program or expect to learn a number of complicated commands and functions This is most traditional type of tutorial that consist of lessons framed by objectives and summary statements This tutorial focus on basic program features, at- least at first and then advanced ones 12

The Instruction Manual (Continue…) Contains a great deal of user interaction so the reader gets involved and invests learning experience This is for users at all levels 13
