The Emperors During Romes Decline

Goals: Who were the emperors during Romes decline? How did they try to save the empire?

Emperor Diocletian Came to power in A.D. 284 Reign was called New Empire because he made new reforms

The Reign of Diocletian Told farmers and merchants how much they could charge for goods (Edict on Prices) Increased size of army and government Divided empire to keep it running smoothly Each side had own government

The Reign of Diocletian Divided empire was expensive - Diocletian created new tax system to pay for it He shared power with another emperor

Emperor Constantine Came to power in A.D. 312 Under him, Christianity became main religion

The Reign of Constantine Built new capital at Byzantium and renamed it Constantinople It is located between Greece and Asia, reachable by land and sea, good defense Dedicated in A.D. 330; became New Rome

After Constantine Nephew, Julian, becomes emperor in A.D. 361 Christianity becomes official religion by A.D. 400 By A.D. 400, empire permanently split
