Flatland The hierarchy By Christina Mrs. McGlennen’s 6 th period class

The Irregulars  Irregular shapes are regarded as the lowest class.  Sometimes, when the difference between the sides is not very great, surgery will be attempted to make the shape more regular.  In cases where irregularity is so extreme it cannot be corrected, the unfortunate shape is painlessly destroyed.  The people in this class held jobs such as trash collecting or farming.

Isosceles Triangles  Isosceles triangles are the soldiers in Flatland.  If the triangle applies itself to learning, eventually it might gain enough prestige that its smallest angle will grow a couple degrees to make it an equilateral triangle. However, this occurs very rarely.

The Women of Flatland  The women of Flatland are straight lines. They have a small point at each end of their bodies.  They are required to show their presence somehow when they are in public so that they do not end up injuring other people around them.  All women stayed at home and did not hold jobs.

Equilateral Triangles  Equilateral triangles were the merchants and tradesmen in Flatland.  They are one of the middle classes and are not held in a low or high regard by other members of society.

Squares and Pentagons  Squares and Pentagons are lawyers, doctors, and gentlemen.  The sons of squares and pentagons will each gain a side. So a pentagon’s son will become a hexagon, a hexagon’s son a heptagon, etc. Each generation gains a side.

Hexagons, Heptagons, Octagons, Decagons, Dodecagons, etc.  These are the nobility. They are very important people in Flatland.  They would hold jobs such as senators and congressmen.  They have somewhat prestigious lifestyles.

Polygonal  Polygons are one of the highest classes.  They have very many sides, often more than twenty.  They would hold jobs like such as being members of the President’s cabinet.

Circles  Circles are the highest class in Flatland. They are not really circles but have so many sides their angle measures make them appear circular.  They will send their children to a special hospital after their birth to have surgery to increase their sides by hundreds.  One circle is known as the Chief Circle, and is like the president in his role in the community.
