UNIT 1 Georgia Geography and the Prehistoric Period UNIT 2 ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How can I describe Georgia with regard to physical features and location?

UNIT 1 GEOGRAPHY of GEORGIA LOCATION GEOGRAPHIC REGIONS PHYSICAL FEATURES

SS8G1a Locate Georgia in relation to region, nation, continent, and hemispheres. Concept: LOCATION

The student will understand that location affects a society’s economy, culture, and development. Why are different places in the world very different from one another? How would you describe the location of Georgia to someone who lives in Saudi Arabia? Canada? California? LOCATION

LOCATION OF GEORGIA Essential Question #1: Where in the world is Georgia?

Where in the World is Georgia? Which hemispheres? Which continent? Which nation? Which region?

Georgia is in the Northern & Western hemispheres

Georgia is on the North American continent

Georgia is in the United States of America

Georgia is in the Southeast region of the USA

How would you describe the location of Polk County in the state of Georgia?

SS8G1b Describe the five geographic regions of Georgia; include the Blue Ridge Mountains, Ridge and Valley, Appalachian Plateau, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain. Concept: LOCATION

GEOGRAPHIC REGIONS OF GEORGIA Essential Question #2: What are the five regions of Georgia and two facts about each?

What are the five geographic regions of Georgia? - Appalachian Plateau - Ridge and Valley - Blue Ridge Mountains - Piedmont - Coastal Plains

APPALACHIAN PLATEAU Descriptions: Smallest region Located in northwest corner Nicknamed TAG corner

Maze of limestone caves, deep canyons, and interesting rock formations Site of: Lookout Mountain, Cloudland Canyon, Chickamauga and Chattanooga Military Parks APPALACHIAN PLATEAU

RIDGE and Valley Description: Located in northwest region of the state between Appalachian Plateau and Blue Ridge Mountains Contains valleys divided by ridges topped with limestone

Ridge and VALLEY Description: Fertile farmland Fields of grain, pastures for cattle, apple orchards Known for industry especially textile and carpet manufacturing. Dalton is known as the “Carpet Capital of the World.”

BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS Description: Located in northeast corner of Georgia Southern end of the Appalachian Mountains- important to state because precipitation starts here Site of Brasstown Bald – GA’s highest peak at 4,784 feet

BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS Description: Soil is mixture of sandy loam and clay Landmarks: Tallulah Gorge, Amicalola Falls, Helen

PIEDMONT Description: Begins in foothills of north Georgia and stretches to central part of state Name means foot of the mountain More than half of state’s population lives in the Piedmont

PIEDMONT Description: Located on top of granite plateau Known for red clay soil Livestock farming (poultry, hogs, cattle) Traditional farming (wheat, soybeans, corn) Site of Stone Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain and Atlanta

COASTAL PLAIN Description: Once the bottom of the ocean floor Can be divided into two smaller regions Inner Coastal Plain- good farmland (peanuts, pecans, onions) Outer Coastal Plain- swamps, marshes, barrier islands, beaches, and deep harbors (seafood gathering and processing, naval stores, international trade)

COASTAL PLAINS Description: Center for naval stores and pulp production in state Largest region- 60% of state’s total acres Site of Okefenokee Swamp, Savannah & Barrier Islands

Look at the map key. Which color represents the high elevation of mountains? Which part of the state is highest in elevation?

SS8G1c Locate and evaluate the importance of key physical features on the development of Georgia; include the Fall Line, Okefenokee Swamp, Appalachian Mountains, Chattahoochee and Savannah Rivers, and barrier islands. Concept: LOCATION

PHYSICAL FEATURES OF GEORGIA Essential Question #3: Where in the state of Georgia are you able to find the Fall Line, Okefenokee swamp, Appalachian Mountains, Chattahoochee and Savannah Rivers, and the barrier islands?

What are some of the physical features of Georgia? Appalachian Mtns Savannah River Fall Line Okefenokee Swamp Barrier Islands Chattahoochee River

What and here is the FALL LINE? Natural boundary that separates the Piedmont and Coastal Plains regions

Zone several miles wide marking prehistoric ocean shoreline Augusta, Macon, & Columbus were built along Fall Line What and where is the FALL LINE?
