The student will develop and master the use of the following map skills: map title, map key, compass rose, use cardinal direction, and use intermediate directions. Performance Task: The student will create a poster project of a map of the United States. This map should include the following: outline of U.S. ( do not have to identify states), draw and label the five major rivers of the U.S. (Mississippi, Ohio, Rio Grande, Colorado, Hudson), draw and label the two major mountain ranges of the U.S. (Appalachian, Rocky), create a map title, map key (symbols for mountains, rivers, etc.), and a compass rose (including the cardinal and intermediate directions). Students will then use their map to answer the attached questions. The answered questions and rubric should be turned in on the same day with the poster. Please do not attach. Materials: Students may use the computer, textbook, markers, colored pencils, construction paper, etc. to create and enhance their poster project. Please let me know if you need any materials. You may be as creative as you would like. Use your imagination! Please use a half of a poster board! (Save the other half for another project later in the year.) Student Work: Please make sure that the project represents work from the student; however, we do expect assistance from the parents. The projects do not have to be perfect, just the work of third grade students. Grading: The attached rubric will be used to grade all projects. Be sure to use the rubric as a guide. Projects are due on Friday, Dec. 5th. This will count as a test grade!
