“Does recycling have a positive effect on the world we live in today?” Research Topic “Does recycling have a positive effect on the world we live in today?”

Research & Facts About 80% of what Americans throw away is recyclable. However, our overall recycling rate is only 28%. Americans throw away enough aluminum to rebuild our entire commercial fleet of airplanes every 3 months. Every ton of paper that is recycled saves 17 trees. United States recycling efforts divert 32% of waste away from landfills.

Reasons to Recycle Recycling reduces waste, which decreases environmental contamination. It helps prevent pollution of the environment. Recycling saves energy that would be used to make new materials. Recycling leads to a decrease in the amount of Greenhouse Gases emitted into the atmosphere. It conserves natural resources.

Plastic and Aluminum There are different types of plastic, each denoted with a number on the bottom. If mixed, different types of plastic may not be possible to recycle. Aluminum can be recycled indefinitely. It takes only 60 days for an aluminum can to go through the recycling process and back on shelves. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to power run a TV for three hours.

Glass It is less expensive to recycle glass than to make it from raw materials. Glass, like aluminum, can be recycled many times over. Glass can take up to 4,000 years to decompose in a landfill.

Percent Recycled

Disadvantages of Recycling Cost of facilities, equipment, licenses, and land. Trucks are required to transport recycling. This increases gas use and emission of harmful materials as exhaust. The trucks are made of materials which should be recycled. Some pollution caused by recycling. Constantly changing market for recyclable materials.

Research Conclusion The benefits of recycling far outweigh the costs. Conservation of energy and natural resources make recycling a great option for reducing waste and pollution.
