The Research The effectiveness of graphic organizers has been studied. One study focused on three classifications of secondary students enrolled in content area classes: students with learning disabilities remedial students students in regular education The results of three separate experiments indicated that graphic organizers, whether teacher-directed, student-directed with text references, or student-directed with clues, produced significantly higher performance than self-study for each group of students. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=1688604&dopt=Citation

Final thoughts . . . Students should be able to use metacognition to determine when they don’t know or understand a concept or idea and what to do to help themselves internalize the new knowledge. Through learning various types of graphic organizers, students are able to have a “fix it” strategy to assist in clarifying their own thinking.

Final thoughts . . . Teachers may expose students to additional graphic organizers. examples shown are only some Teachers can think “outside of the box” when choosing graphic organizers. - The more a student connects with a graphic organizer, the easier it will be for them to internalize the information.

Keep up the fabulous work! Thank you for your support! Keep up the fabulous work!
