Today I will study the components of an ecosystem because I need to understand how living things depend on one another.

W ARM U P Explain what an ecosystem is. This is in your notes, USE THEM!!! Use complete sentences!!

V OLUNTEERS …. An ecosystem is : All the plants and animals found in a particular location Remember these plants and animals depend on each other for survival.

AGENDA Today we will be learning about ecosystems and biomes along with the various terms scientists use to describe the different levels

W RITE IN NOTEBOOK : Ecology : study of how organisms interact with their environment and one another Ecologists: study animals and their environments at different levels Ecologist Jane Goodall : Studied chimpanzees in Africa

W RITE IN NOTEBOOK : Ecosystems = all the organisms living in the same area AND their nonliving environment.

W RITE IN NOTEBOOK Abiotic Factors = all nonliving factors TemperatureAmount of sunlight Water (fresh or salty)Climate (rain, weather) Soil (rocky, sandy, fertile)

W RITE IN NOTEBOOK Biotic Factors: all living factors Plants (producers) Animals (consumers)

D ID YOU KNOW ? Scientists group living things based on similar characteristics Scientists use an Ecosystem Pyramid to show these relationships

A DD TO TABLE OF CONTENTS #___ Ecosystem Pyramid

W RITE IN NOTEBOOK Individual species: 1 specific type of organism

W RITE IN NOTEBOOK Population : groups of the same species living in the same area Interbreeding; species are so similar they can produce offspring

W RITE IN NOTEBOOK Community : Many different populations interacting with each other

W RITE IN NOTEBOOK Ecosystem : the community of living organisms along with their nonliving environments

W RITE IN NOTEBOOK Biomes : areas of similar climates with similar plants and animals found in specific regions around the Earth

W RITE IN NOTEBOOK Biosphere: Is EVERYTHING…

B RAIN P OP : L AND BIOMES We are watching and listening to the video to learn about different biomes

W RITE IN NOTEBOOK Biome examples: Rain forestDesert TundraTaiga GrasslandMarine Freshwater Temperate Deciduous Forest

D IFFERENT B IOMES … Biomes have unique plants and animals They also have unique climates (rainfall, temperatures, amounts and intensity of sunlight) For instance: A tropical rainforest has lots of rain, is humid and hot. Plants grow thick and deep in the rainforest; animals have adapted to this unique environment in order to survive

V IDEO ON B IOMES – A VISUAL JOURNEY /watch?v=hIy0ZlyPPDg

A CTIVITY Now close your eyes… Imagine you are in a rainforest Sounds of the rainforest..

C LOSE YOUR EYES! Imagine an animal you could find in the rainforest — now think of something you know about this animals. Think about your animal alone as an individual species. What does it look like? How does it move? How does it obtain food?

C LOSE YOUR EYES! Now imagine this animal interacting with others of its kind. Does your animal live alone or in a group? How does it take care of its young? How does it interact with other adults ?

C LOSE YOUR EYES! Next think of other types of living things your animal might interact with. What does it eat? What eats it? Does it depend on grasses or trees for shelter or making a nest? Does it compete with other types of animals for food?

C LOSE YOUR EYES! Next think of the non-living things that your animal interacts with. Where does it make its home? Where does it find water? What type of soil does it live on? What is the weather like where it lives?

C LOSE YOUR EYES! Finally, think about your organism in relationship to the whole planet Earth. Imagine a picture of the Earth from space. Where on the planet does your animal live? How does its life affect the lives around it? Does its life affect you?

N OW OPEN YOUR EYES …. In this activity, we ZOOMED out from 1 INDIVIDUAL species to the WHOLE planet known as the biosphere.

I N YOUR NOTEBOOK … Write down all the things you need to make the BEST ice cream sundae EVER! Add at least ten things. Be detailed ! Best ice cream sundae creator gets CANDY !
