Natural Disaster Project: Yellowstone Super Volcano Andrew H.

General Facts The entire Yellowstone national park takes up 2,219,791 acres of land Home of lakes, rivers, mountain ranges, canyons, along with the famous Old Faithful Geyser Is the source of ½ of the geothermal features of the world The area has lots of volcanic rock and lava flows It’s home to the largest super volcano in North America

About the Volcano Itself Some believe that the Yellowstone area is right above a “hotspot” within the mantle Magma gets caught in a chamber near the surface, magma pushes up, creating a bulge on the surface, the surface cracks, eventually falls into the chamber, forming a large hole in the ground that eventually gets filled with the magma

Magma chamber bulges the surface Magma chambers causes the surface to crack apart (and volcanic material is released) Surface collapses into the chamber Magma fills in the hole left behind

Eruptions Believed that there’ve been three cataclysmic eruptions 1st One of the five largest known eruptions of all volcanoes Formed a caldera 60 miles across Formed the Huckleberry Ridge Tuff

A younger, similar, not as large eruption Caused the Henrys Fork Caldera and the Mesa Falls Tuff Most recent eruption Formed the Yellowstone Caldera, which is 35 miles wide, 50 miles long Caused the Lava Creek Tuff Volcanic ash (believed to be from this eruption) can currently be found in areas like California, Louisiana, and Iowa
