Jonghwi PARK ICT in Education, APEID UNESCO Bangkok How to Design Project Based Learning : Lesson Plan

In this session… We will complete 1)Step 1.2 Refine the Topic and Outputs for the PBL 2)Step 1.3 Define Students’ Learning Objectives 3)Step 2 Write the Brief Description of Your Group’s PBL 4)Step 3 Select and Analyze the Participating Students  Upload your work  Group presentation at 4:00pm

What is a project? An activity that takes place over an extended period of time Usually is linked /similar to a real-world task Integrative in approach Project  product, presentation or performance

Project-based Learning Definition: A learning method in which learners do projects to apply and integrate concepts learned Learning through experience or hands-on learning Benefits: deeper knowledge about a topic more interesting and engaging learning research and problem-solving skills higher order thinking skills application in real life collaborative learning skills 2. Fieldwork - gathering and compiling information and resources 1. Planning - discussion of a project topic, setting targets and timelines, tasking 3. Implementation – developing the project, doing the project activities 5. Assessment – peer assessment, self-reflection and/or group reflection 4. Presentation - presenting the project to an audience

Why do PBL? To develop deeper knowledge about a topic To make learning more interesting and engaging To improve learners’ research and problem- solving skills To develop higher order thinking skills To help learners see how what they are learning can be used in real life To develop collaborative learning skills

Why do PBL? "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." - Confucius “What I hear, I forget. What I hear, and see, I remember a little. What I hear, see and ask questions about or, discuss with someone else, I begin to understand. What I hear, see, discuss, and do, I acquire knowledge and skill about. What I teach to another, I master.” - ALS adaptation

Phases of PBL Role of Teacher 1. Planning - discussion of a project topic, setting targets and timelines, tasking Guide/Coach learners, facilitate, provide access to resources, manage the process 2. Fieldwork - gathering and compiling information and resources 3. Implementation – developing the project, doing the project activities 4. Presentation - presenting the project to an audience 5. Assessment – peer assessment, and self-reflection and/or group reflection Facilitate self- (and peer) assessment, assess learner’s work and provide feedback

Elements of PBL  Driving Questions  Knowledge, Skills, Attitude  Independent Research Process  Engagement, Collaboration and Communication  Creation

Example PBL: Oral History Collection and Performance Collecting oral history skill workshop Transforming Stories into music Performing to the public

PBL  Exciting?  What would be the challenges in designing/implementing PBL in your schools?

What makes a good project: CREATE Curriculum-based and contextualized themes: Real-world issues Expert thinking needed Achievable and measurable results Team work Extending learning time and space beyond classroom boundaries

Step 1.3 Learning Objectives (Bloom’s) Creating Evaluating Analyzing Applying Understanding Remembering

Example: Online Tour to Our Tribal Heritages Students from … school A, school B, and school C will design a website on local heritages. The website should include the content on and provide functions including …; through producing the website and online discussion, the students from different tribal backgrounds are expected to gain intercultural understanding on … and learn how to appreciate … and live together with… Step 2 Brief Description of Your PBL

1)Selecting participating students -Grade level, language, ICT level, interest, etc 2) Plan the student grouping strategies 3) Analyze necessary skills to be prepared before or during the PBL process Step 3. Select and Analyze the Participating Students

1)Complete the worksheet up to Step 3. 2)Upload your worksheet by 4.15pm 3)Two/Three group presentations starting at 4.15pm After Coffee Break…

Thank you… Jonghwi Park Mel Tan Hartie Schmid
