Math 5 Comparing and ordering Decimals part 1 Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner

In this lesson we will learn how to compare decimals that are written to the same place value.

Math Warm-up In your Math Notebook Add across Add down Add your results across and down. Put these answers in the triangles = = == What do you notice about your results? Try to use mental math.

Math Warm-up In your Math Notebook = = == What do you notice about your results? I noticed that the answers were the same

Vocabulary greater than – bigger, > less than – smaller, < equal to – same, =

Vocabulary compare – to see if something is the same or different ordering – to put numbers in order based on size

In this lesson we will answer these questions: How can you compare decimals? How can you order decimals?

How can you compare decimals? Let’s compare the decimals and Step 1 Line up the decimal points

How can you compare decimals? Let’s compare the decimals and Step 2 Compare digits of the same place value, starting at the left

How can you compare decimals? Let’s compare the decimals and Step 3 Keep comparing digits as you move to the right until you find digits that are different

How can you compare decimals? Let’s compare the decimals and Step 4 Compare Which is bigger?

How can you compare decimals? Which is bigger? is bigger than In math we say, “5.785 is greater than ” We write > 5.782

Let’s compare the decimals and Step 1

Let’s compare the decimals and Step 1 Line up the decimal points

Let’s compare the decimals and Step

Let’s compare the decimals and Step 2 Compare digits of the same place value, starting at the left

Let’s compare the decimals and Step 3

Let’s compare the decimals and Step 3 Keep comparing digits as you move to the right until you find digits that are different

How can you compare decimals? Let’s compare the decimals and Step 4 Compare Which is smaller?

When you see a problem asking you to compare decimals it will look like this: You will have to put in the >,<, or = sign

You will have to put in the >,<, or = sign Which is bigger?

1.03 < 1.23 You will have to put in the >,<,= sign Which is bigger? 1.23 is bigger, so the symbol will open toward that number.

Try these in your Math Notebook

Ordering decimals is very similar to comparing decimals. It is when you put three or more decimals in order from greatest (biggest) to least (smallest) or least to greatest.

Order the following numbers from least to greatest: 2.812, 2.809, Step 1: Line up the decimal points

Order the following numbers from least to greatest: 2.812, 2.809, Step 2: Compare digits of the same place value beginning at the left

Order the following numbers from least to greatest: 2.812, 2.809, Step 2: Compare digits of the same place value beginning at the left this number is the least 2.809

Order the following numbers from least to greatest: 2.812, 2.809, Step 3: Continue to compare digits of the same place value beginning at the left this number is the least

Order the following numbers from least to greatest: 2.812, 2.809, Step 4: Write the numbers from least to greatest , 2.809, 2.812

Order the following numbers from greatest to least: 5.312, 5.132, Step 1:

Order the following numbers from greatest to least: 5.312, 5.132, Step 1: Line up the decimal points

Order the following numbers from greatest to least: 5.312, 5.132, Step 2:

Order the following numbers from greatest to least: 5.312, 5.132, Step 2: Compare digits of the same place value beginning at the left

Order the following numbers from greatest to least: 5.312, 5.132, Step 2: Compare digits of the same place value beginning at the left this number is the greatest

Order the following numbers from greatest to least: 5.312, 5.132, Step 3:

Order the following numbers from greatest to least: 5.312, 5.132, Step 3: Continue to compare digits of the same place value beginning at the left this number is the greatest 5.123

Order the following numbers from greatest to least: 5.312, 5.132, Step 4: this number is the greatest 5.123

Order the following numbers from greatest to least: 5.312, 5.132, Step 4: Write the numbers from least to greatest , 5.132, 5.123
