Auburn Girls Owasco Country Club

Basic Golf Rules 1.If you swing and miss, it does not count as a stroke. 2. If you swing and the ball moves no matter if it is only an inch, it counts as a stoke. 3. If the ball goes off course, and is headed for other golfers, yell “FORE!” 4. Always replace your DIVOTS! A divot is when the ground is “dug up” by your shot. In the fairway you can fix your divot by getting the chunk of grass and stepping on it. 5. Always repair your ball marks on the green.

6. Teeing Off- The first shot off a hole the ball is put on a tee between the tee off markers. Who ever has the lowest score from the last hole, hits first. Remember to stay quiet and stay behind the person hitting. DO NOT STAND IN THEIR VIEW. **Women’s tee’s are typically Owasco- Front 9- Tees are RED and the Back 9- Tees are BLUE **Men’s tee’s are typically white

4 7. Second and third shots....The player farthest from the hole hits first. As you are walking, look for your ball and the yardage markers.

Yardage Markers **Yardage markers in fairway are measured to center of the green. Red Marker=100 yards to the green White Marker=150 yards to the green Blue Marker=200 yards to the green

8. No matter if you are swinging or putting, don’t take all day to hit the ball! 9. No cell phones on the course! 10. Play ready golf!

THE GREEN Red Pin=Pin is located in the front of the green White Pin=Pin is located in the middle of the green Blue Pin=Pin is located in the back of the green

When on the green, remember to… Announce your score to other players. Mark your ball. Don't step on your fellow players putting lines -- the imaginary line that connects the ball to the hole. If you are closest to the hole, take the flag out and place it gently where it is not in the way, preferably off the green. If you are asked to tend the flagstick (possibly because another player cannot see the hole without it) hold the flagstick at an arm’s length and make sure you are not standing in anyone’s line or that your shadow doesn’t fall across the hole or the player’s line Do not stand where you might distract a fellow player and don't move. Don't make any noise when your fellow player is preparing to putt. After everyone has putted, return the flagstick and immediately walk to the next tee to determine final scores.

Bunkers Do not ground your club in the bunker (do not let your club touch the ground). Take your practice swing outside the bunker. You may move any stones or leaves that are in the bunker out of the way. You may NOT touch your ball. You must rake the bunker when you are done. After place the rake inside the bunker.

10 10.Dropping a Ball Water Hazards If your ball lands in the water and you can’t find it, you may drop a ball behind the hazard from the point it went in the water and add 1 stroke penalty to your score. At Owasco, water hazzards are determined by yellow stakes and lines Out of Bounds If your ball goes out of bounds you add a 1 stroke penalty and play another ball from the original spot. At Owasco, out of bounds are defined by white stakes or white lines. **If you are not sure if you went out of bounds or in the water, you can always hit a provisional ball. Advise other players your are doing so. “I hate the water hazard on this hole.”

The person with the lowest score wins STROKE = Every time you hit the ball. Count the number of strokes it takes to get the ball from the tee to the cup. PAR = Then number of stokes it should take the skilled golfer from the tee to the cup. BIRDIE = One stroke under Par EAGLE = Two Strokes under Par BOGGIE= One stroke over Par Scoring = Integrity

After Match Play… Shake hands with the other players. Get your group together and check the hole by hole scores and then get a total. If there are any rulings, get them taken care of before signing the card. Sign the official card. Bring card to the coaches. DO NOT leave the “scoring area” until the coaches have checked and recorded the scores for the group.
