THE PROCESS OF WRITING Presented by Mr. Williams

THE PROCESS OF WRITING Writing should not be treated as a “once and done” activity. Sample Prompt: Almost every part of the world is sometimes hit by a disaster: earthquakes, flood, hurricanes, tornadoes or fires. In your essay, focus on one type of disaster that has been known to hit a particular area with which you are familiar. What kinds of problems should people be prepared for when such a disaster hits. What should people do to prepare themselves for such a disaster?

THE PROCESS OF WRITING Writing should not be treated as a “once and done” activity. The Four Stages Planning Organizing Drafting Revising

THE PROCESS OF WRITING Writing should not be treated as a “once and done” activity. Planning  Think about what you want to say  Find things to write about  Identify a main idea that you want to convey

THE PROCESS OF WRITING Focus on your Assignment, Purpose, and Audience Assignment: What are you expected to write about? Purpose: Why are you writing? Audience: For whom are you writing? (Focus on Writing: Kirszner and Mandell)

THE PROCESS OF WRITING “Fail to Plan; Fail to Succeed. There is no achievement without a plan.” Assignment What is your assignment? Do you have a word or page limit? When is your assignment due? Will you be expected to complete your assignment at home or in class? Will you be expected to work on your own or with others? Will you be allowed to revise before or after you hand in your assignment? (Focus on Writing: Kirszner and Mandell)

THE PROCESS OF WRITING “Fail to Plan; Fail to Succeed. There is no achievement without a plan.” Purpose Are you expected to express your personal reactions-for example, to tell how you feel about a news event? Are you expected to present information-for example, to describe a process in a lab report? Are you expected to take a position on controversial issue? (Focus on Writing: Kirszner and Mandell)

THE PROCESS OF WRITING “Fail to Plan; Fail to Succeed. There is no achievement without a plan.” Audience Who will read your paper-just your instructor or other students as well? How much will your readers know about your topic? Will your readers expect you to use formal or informal language? (Focus on Writing: Kirszner and Mandell)

THE PROCESS OF WRITING “Fail to Plan; Fail to Succeed. There is no achievement without a plan.” Four Strategies Freewriting Brainstorming Clustering Journal Writing

THE PROCESS OF WRITING self-discipline Immature behavior An important decision A recent invention Ads on television Handling money wisely My favorite place Unsafe driving Healthy foods A good book

THE PROCESS OF WRITING Identifying a Main Idea/Writing a Topic Sentence Community service takes time, but it is so important that college students should be required to do it. Many people are convinced that large doses of Vitamin C will prevent the common cold. Climate change, a crisis for our cities. High school science courses should teach students about climate change. In this paragraph, I will discuss global warming. Buying books online. College students can save money by buying their textbooks on-line.

THE PROCESS OF WRITING Identifying a Main Idea/Writing a Topic Sentence Effectively Written Topic Sentences are written as complete sentences: Topic: Community service Topic Sentence: Community service should be a required activity for all students at Brooklyn Tech.

THE PROCESS OF WRITING Identifying a Main Idea/Writing a Topic Sentence Effectively Written Topic Sentences are more than announcements of what writers plan to say: Announcement: In this paragraph, I will explain my ideas about community service. Topic Sentence: My ideas about community service changed after I started to volunteer at a homeless shelter.

THE PROCESS OF WRITING Identifying a Main Idea/Writing a Topic Sentence Effectively Written Topic Sentences present an idea that can be discussed in a single paragraph: Broad Topic Sentence: Students all over the country participate in community service, making important contributions to their communities. Effective Topic Sentence: The community service requirement at Brooklyn Tech has had three positive results.
