Bear Needs a Bed by Mrs. Kittle’s Smileys

It was a cold winter day in the woods. The snowflakes were falling. A bear was wondering all around when he met a little robin. “What is the matter, Bear? asked Robin. “I’m very tired, but I can’t go to sleep,” answered bear. “Why can’t you ?” asked Robin. “Well, I ate and ate all fall. I didn’t stop to find a winter home. Now I have no place to sleep.” “I’m sorry Bear, but I can’t help you. I have to go. I have a long trip ahead of me. I need to fly south so I can find food. I’ll see you in the spring. Bye-bye”. And little Robin flew away.

Just then a squirrel ran up to bear. “Why don’t you come live in my home,” he asked. Bear asked, “ Where is your home, Squirrel?” Squirrel pointed to the big oak tree. “Up in that tree. I have a cozy nest.” “But isn’t it cold up there?” Bear shivered. “Oh, no. My nest is full of nice soft leaves. It keeps me warm and snug. “Your home sounds nice,” said Bear. “But it is too small for me. I need a big home.”

Just then a deer trotted by. “Hello, Bear. How are you?” “I’m cold and sleepy. I need a winter bed,” yawned bear. “Why don’t you stay with me?” asked Deer. But deer move from place to place looking for food all day and sleeping in the bushes at night. Bears can’t do that. They sleep for days and days. They need one place to sleep. So Deer said good-bye and trotted away.

Just then a rabbit hopped up to bear. She said, “Bear, you look very tired!” “I am tired, Rabbit. I should be sleeping now but I can’t find a bed.” “You can sleep in my home, said Rabbit. “Where so you live, Rabbit? Asked Bear. “I live in a hole under the woodpile,” answered Rabbit. “Will I fit?” asked Bear.

“Oh, dear. You are very big. Why don’t you try the cave?” asked Rabbit. Bear looked around. “Cave? What cave?” “The one behind you,” pointed Rabbit. “It’s big and it’s empty, too.” “It won’t be empty for long,” yawned bear. Bear crawled into the cave, yawned again and laid down. All the animals were happy for Bear and yelled, “Good night, Bear! Sleep well.”

Bear thanked all the animals for their help and said. “Goodnight everyone. I’ll see you in the spring.” She settled down for a long winter’s nap. Months went by but spring finally arrived in the woods. All the animals were out enjoying the sunny day.

Robin flew in and landed in a tree near the cave. “Tweet! Tweet! Tweet!” she sang. Squirrel rushed over to see Robin. “Welcome back, Robin. It’s nice to hear your spring song.” “Thank you. It’s nice to see you, too,” exclaimed Robin. “Is Bear up yet?” Squirrel looked around. “I don’t think so. I haven’t seen him. Chicka-chicka-chicka!”

Up hopped Rabbit. “Is Bear up yet,” she asked. “Not yet,” said squirrel. Deer strolled by on her afternoon walk. “Has anyone seen Bear yet?”

“I know how to wake her,” said rabbit and she thumped her hind legs down hard on the ground. “Thumpa-thumpa-thumpa!”

That did wake up Bear. She yawned and growled and stretched. She peaked out of the cave door and rubbed her eyes. “Who is making all that noise?” grumbled Bear. “Is it spring yet?”

“Yes it is!” Time to wake up they all yelled. “How was your nap?” “Thank you, thank you! I had a GRRRRRReat nap thanks to all you guys. Happy Springtime ! The End
