Gal 6:12 Ron Merryman Galatians: God’s Antidote to Legalism pg. 117 “Legalists always have an ax to grind; they relentlessly (present tense) use various forms of pressure tactics to get followers to subscribe. “In this case the goal was circumcision. By application, legalists today often use pressure tactics to gain confessions of faith, converts, decisions for baptism, church membership, et. Behind the pressure tactics is often the desire to impress someone or ‘to make a fair show in the flesh.’ Bible believers should learn that only the Word of God and the Spirit of God can effectively accomplish the work of God. God does not need fleshly pressure tactics! His Word effectively accomplishes that which He sends it forth to do (Isa. 55:11).”

Galatians 6:12-13 “The Hidden Motives of the Persecutors” A. The Approval of the People (6:12a) B. The Avoidance of Persecution (6:12b) C. The Appearance of Perfection (6:13a) D. The Attitude of Pride (6:13b)

Gal 6:12 David Jeremiah Claiming Faith finding Freedom; the study of Galatians pg. 112 “If the Galatians had accepted the requirement of circumcision for salvation, it would have marginalized the cross of Jesus Christ. If there is anything one can do to earn his salvation, then the cross is no longer central to the Gospel and man can take some credit for his standing with God. This is where the danger of legalism can be seen for what it really is—diminishing the perfect atoning death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. “…The gospel of grace is offensive to people because it leaves them helpless and unable to save themselves. But that is the whole point— Christ did what we could not do for ourselves. ”

Gal 6:12 Ron Merryman Galatians: God’s Antidote to Legalism pp “It is the cross of Christ that makes circumcision and all rituals or forms non-essential. The cross of Christ is God’s emphatic pronunciation to the world that all men are sinners including men who tried or still try to keep God’s law. Moreover, Messiah alone, through His cross work, has effectually paid the full-redemptive price to purchase men out of the slave market of sin and deliver them from the curse of God’s law. “Such a message is an offense, an affront, to the religious mentality of Jew and Gentile alike; therefore, if one can add a ritual or a work to the cross, he can then avoid some of its offense. This is precisely what the Judaistic legalizers were doing at Galatia: They were pushing circumcision to avoid the offensive stigma to Jews of Messiah’s cross. Add to the cross some condition for salvation and one avoids some of its offense. They were wrongly motivated: In seeking to circumvent the stigma of Christ’s cross, they perverted its message.”

Galatians 6:12-13 “The Hidden Motives of the Persecutors” A. The Approval of the People (6:12a) B. The Avoidance of Persecution (6:12b) C. The Appearance of Perfection (6:13a) D. The Attitude of Pride (6:13b)

Gal 6:13 Ron Merryman Galatians: God’s Antidote to Legalism pp. 118 “Legalists always major in the minors and circumvent the major. Since legalism in all its forms is fleshly religion, one can expect fleshly manifestations. Here the boast was in the mark in the flesh, a form of cosmic thinking. In contrast, Paul boasted in the doctrine of the cross of Messiah, a manifestation of divine viewpoint.”
