Write-On to an Essay Topic Sentences and Supporting Evidence

What is a topic sentence? A sentence that communicates the meaning of the paragraph. A topic sentence develops one major point and gives unity to the paragraph. A topic sentence links to the thesis to signify which part of the thesis will be discussed.

What is a topic sentence? An Analogy A thesis unifies an entire essay by providing a controlling idea(s); a topic sentence unifies an entire paragraph around one controlling idea.

So if your thesis is “Families and singles should move to Austin because of the outstanding university, beautiful Lady Bird Lake, and delicious Mexican food.” Topic Sentence 1- Austin is home to the University of Texas which offers many learning and social opportunities to people living in Austin.

So if your thesis is “Families and singles should move to Austin because of the outstanding university, beautiful Lady Bird Lake, and delicious Mexican food.” Topic Sentence 2- People living in Austin can spend many hours enjoying outdoor activities at Beautiful Lady Bird Lake.

So if your thesis is “Families and singles should move to Austin because of the outstanding university, beautiful Lady Bird Lake, and delicious Mexican food.” Topic Sentence 3- Austin has many excellent restaurants that serve delicious Mexican food.

A topic sentence… normally appears as the first sentence of the paragraph. includes keywords or phrases from the thesis sentence. is a single declarative statement, not a question or prediction. signals to the reader the progression of the essay.

Practice with Topic Sentences Each group receives a set of sentences. The group will put the sentences in two stacks- one that represents topic sentences and one stack of non-topic sentences. Groups exchange stacks of topic sentences. With the new group of topic sentences underline what the topic of the paragraph will be.
