2. Persuasive Essay Persuasive writing is writing that tries to convince a reader to do something or to believe what you believe about a certain topic. It takes a position for or against something.

4. First…Know Your Audience Before you start writing, you should know your audience: Who will read your writing? Who do you need to convince? The audience may be your friends, your teacher, your parents, your principal, the readers of a newspaper, etc.

19. 5. The Anecdote An anecdote can provide an attention-getting opening if it is short and to the point. The odds of an American dying in a plane crash are about one in 11 million. It just so happened that my father was that one in 11 million because he rode on an airplane piloted by an overworked captain flying beyond the prescribed hours.

20. Thesis Statement A thesis statement is one sentence at the end of your introduction that states your opinion. It needs to be strong. First, choose 3 main focus points to discuss in your essay. These points will become the focus of three paragraphs in the body of your paper. People should avoid eating at fast food restaurants because fast food rapidly increases weight, causes high blood pressure, and leads to sluggishness.
