ALL4NEPAL – Update No4

So what can we do Global Partnership Making a Difference RT NEPAL

Nepal Quake 2015 A massive earthquake of magnitude 7.9 on the Richter scale struck Nepal on 25th April 2015 at 11:56 a.m. The intensity of the quake spread to several countries surrounding Nepal like Bangladesh, Bhutan, China and India More than 7000 deaths (Figures estimated to cross deaths) More than injured 8 million people affected in Nepal alone 2.8 million children in need of humanitarian assistance More than 80% buildings damaged in villages of Nuwakot & Sindhupalchowk districts alone Districts affected : 36 Schools completely damaged : 575 Schools partly damaged : 969 Students Affected :1.5 Million

Why Round Table’s focus is on Schools? Over Class rooms have been destroyed by this Earth Quake in Nepal. About 1 million students don’t have place to study. If Children do not get back to school and in education again, they may get engaged in labour jobs and never return to school and will have a potential devastating effect on there lives and that of Nepal in the future. When schools have been made, it can be used as shelter for community at night and in day time children can get education.

Our Long Term strategy: Rehabilitation Objective Our aim is to build 100 classrooms and 50 TLC's (temporary learning centers). We have chosen Nuwakot which is about 2 hours from Kathmandu, as its one of the most affected area. We will have two kinds of reconstruction – Retrofitting the damaged structures Building completely new room Our classrooms will be as per the approved design of the Government and we will take permission from the District Education Officer. Budget As all the engineers are busy, we have not got all the cost for retrofitting and repair. The costing have started coming in and we are on the process of scrutinizing. Rationale Non Clearing of debris may prevent the students from going to school due to fear of the existing damaged school building. Stopping to go to school now might end up in the children starting to do odd jobs. They may never return back to school. This leads to the high risk of children being engaged in child labor

TLC and Classrooms The Goverment is working cost effective design for regular classroom, since it does not have budget its not priority at the moment. Goverment is working on starting all the schools asap with temporary learning centers (TLC) there are 2 types of TLC’s temporary made of bamboo and tarpaulin and second is semi permanent with steel structure and corrugated sheets. Goverment wants schools to get into operational asap using TLC and slowly build permanent classrooms when they get budget for the same. We are in the process of making Steel TLC which can later be converted to permanent classroom by adding flooring, walls, doors and windows. The ones that we have completed have the floor and half wall included from the start.

Project Activities Building of new ClassroomsRetrofitting / Repair Existing Ones Phase 1 Supplying necessary construction Materials Erection of the frame Foundation, floor and half wall Corrugated sheets for roofing Finishing and handling over to the school management Schools and classrooms which have damages will be verified & checked by structural engineers and report issued to see if cost effective to repair. Based on recommendations from the structural engineer & approval by MoE will provide necessary retro fitting & repairs to those schools deemed cost effective to do. Phase 2 Later, after approval of design from MoE, we plan to make this building permanent by making necessary windows, doors etc.
