Pythagorean Theorem Exploring Space Through Math: Lunar Rover NASA EXPLORER SCHOOLS PRESENTS Presented by: Jordan Snyder

Agenda 1. Lunar Rover – Past and future. 2. Why explore the moon? 3. Where the lesson fits. 4. Engaging your students. 5. Model + Practice. 6. NASA Explorer Schools.

What do you know about Apollo?

Who is this? What did he do?

Who said this? "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed."

Where did they land?

Apollo landing sites

The Apollo Program

The history of the Lunar Rover

The future of the Lunar Rover

Feed me back! 1. What did you learn that you previously didn’t know? 2. Would your students find lunar exploration interesting?

It’s cool, but why go? Human Civilization Extend human presence to the moon to enable eventual settlement.

Scientific Knowledge History of our solar system.

Global Partnerships Let’s work together!

Exploration Preparation Tests to reduce risk of future endeavors.

Public Engagement It’s interesting!

The Lesson

Learning Objectives SWBAT  Create a scale drawing to model a real life problem.  Apply the Pythagorean Theorem and distance/rate formula, d = rt.  Analyze data to find a solution.

Where does the lesson fit? COMMON CORE HIGH SCHOOL Modeling with Geometry G-MG-Apply geometric concepts in modeling situations. G-MG.3-Apply geometric methods to solve design problems.

Where does the lesson fit? COMMON CORE HIGH SCHOOL Algebra-Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities A-REI-Represent and solve equations and inequalities graphically.

Where does the lesson fit? COMMON CORE 8 TH GRADE GEOMETRY 8.G-Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem 8.G.7-Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions. 8.G.8-Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance between two points in a coordinate system.

Is your district transitioning to Common Core? A. Yes, effective immediately. B. No, we use NCTM. C. Yes, but we’re making a gradual transition. D. Other (type in chat window).

How do you feel about transitioning to Common Core? A. Excited! B. It’s a lot of work. C. We’re not, I already told you that. D. I don’t teach math. E. Other (type in chat window).

Any other thoughts on the Common Core Standards?
