Welcome to Geometry Mrs. Manning Room 201

Judy Manning  Bachelor of Science Northern Kentucky University Degrees: Mathematics and Psychology  Masters of Education Northern Kentucky University Concentration: Mathematics  26 years of teaching experience at Highlands Middle School

New Common Core Standards What does that mean for my child? Fewer concepts More in-depth More rigorous Mastery learning Level Playing Field *Geometry seems to be the area with the fewest changes.

The Common Core Standards o Congruence o Transformations in the plane o Congruence in terms of rigid motions o Prove geometric theorems o Make geometric constructions o Similarity, Right Triangles, and Trig o Understand similarity from transformations o Define and apply trig ratios related to right triangles o Apply trigonometry to other triangles o Prove similarity theorems o Modeling with Geometry o Apply geometric concepts to create models in order to solve problems.

o Circles o Understand and apply theorems about circles o Find arc lengths and areas of sectors of circles o Expressing Geometric Properties with Equations o Translate between the geometric description and the equation for a conic section o Use coordinates to prove simple geometric theorems algebraically. o Geometric Measurement and Dimension o Explain volume formulas and use them to solve problems. o Visualize the relationship between two- dimensional and three-dimensional models.

Develop the following Mathematical Practices  Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.  Reason abstractly and quantitatively.  Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.  Model with mathematics.  Use appropriate tools strategically.  Attend to precision.  Look for and make use of structure.  Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Communicate Mathematically

Teaching Environment  Active  Hands-On  Discovery  Collaborative  Develops Critical Thinking  Rigorous

Our Textbook

Homework  Yes, they really do have it everyday.  It won’t all be in the book.  There are a few rare exceptions.  When in doubt, check the website.  We practice to solidify our skills, determine what we still need to work on, and to develop mastery.  Late work will be completed in Saturday School.

Grading  Point System Class work (5-25 pts) Homework (5 – 25 pts) Quizzes ( about 50 pts) Tests ( pts) Projects (50 – 100 pts) Open Responses (25-50 pts)

Web Site  Syllabus  Announcements about upcoming quizzes, tests, projects  Assignments  Copies of homework (if a handout)  Pictures of our active learning

Contact Information  Phone:   Contact information also on website  Contact me any time if you have a question or concern.

What can you do to help your child be successful in math this year?  Encourage them to ask questions if they don’t understand or if they are confused.  Monitor homework completion.  Touch base with your child frequently to know when they should be studying for quizzes and tests, etc.  Let me know immediately if there is any kind of issue or concern.

Thank You For Coming Tonight!
