Yahweh brings Israel to Himself on Eagle’s Wings Exodus 19:1 – 9 Presented by Bob DeWaay August 3, 2008

Israel comes to Horeb/Sinai Exodus 19:1, 2 In the third month after the sons of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that very day they came into the wilderness of Sinai. When they set out from Rephidim, they came to the wilderness of Sinai and camped in the wilderness; and there Israel camped in front of the mountain.

Exodus 3:11, 12 But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?” And He said, “Certainly I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain.” Moses’ return to Horeb is a sign

Exodus 19:3, 4 Moses went up to God, and the L ORD called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob and tell the sons of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings, and brought you to Myself.’” Yahweh’s protective care for His people

Exodus 19:5 Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine; An unconditional covenant with conditional, personal participation

Exodus 19:6 “and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel. Israel is set apart by God as a priest who bring the knowledge of Yahweh to the world

Treasured Possession Kingdom of Priests Holy Nation Three designations of Israel as uniquely Yahweh’s people

Exodus 19:7 So Moses came and called the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which the L ORD had commanded him. God’s word is received

Exodus 19:8 All the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do!” And Moses brought back the words of the people to the L ORD. The people agree to the covenant relationship

Exodus 19:9 The L ORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will come to you in a thick cloud, so that the people may hear when I speak with you and may also believe in you forever.” Then Moses told the words of the people to the L ORD. The people need to trust Moses who speaks for God

Applications and Implications 1)God will bring His covenant people safely to Himself 2)The covenant promises of God to Israel are both unconditional and conditional 3) God’s covenant people are to show the world what God has done

1)God will bring His covenant people safely to Himself Deuteronomy 32:11, 12 Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, That hovers over its young, He spread His wings and caught them, He carried them on His pinions. The Lord alone guided him, And there was no foreign god with him.

1)God will bring His covenant people safely to Himself Romans 8:14, 15 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

1)God will bring His covenant people safely to Himself Romans 8:33, 34 Who will bring a charge against God's elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.

2)The covenant promises of God to Israel are both unconditional and conditional Deuteronomy 7:6 “For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.”

2)The covenant promises of God to Israel are both unconditional and conditional Deuteronomy 7:7, 8 “The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but because the Lord loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your forefathers, the Lord brought you out by a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.”

2)The covenant promises of God to Israel are both unconditional and conditional Deuteronomy 28:9 The Lord will establish you as a holy people to Himself, as He swore to you, if you will keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and walk in His ways.

2)The covenant promises of God to Israel are both unconditional and conditional Romans 11:28, 29 From the standpoint of the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God's choice they are beloved for the sake of the fathers; for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

3) God’s covenant people are to show the world what God has done 1Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

3) God’s covenant people are to show the world what God has done 1Peter 2:12 Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may on account of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.
