John 4:1-42 Jesus talks with a Samaritan Woman

Overview Jesus reason for being in Samaria Jesus conversation with the woman Jesus conversation with his disciples The results of Jesus visit to Samaria Today’s “take away”

Jesus reason for being in Samaria (Verses 1-4) Jesus’ ministry was being watched by the Pharisees They were comparing / creating competition They were misinformed Jesus was clear about his mission He knew that his time had not yet come Jesus left because of success not failure Jesus was compelled (spiritually) to go through Samaria

Mount Gerizim Sychar Jesus had been in Judea the south Jesus was heading North to Galilee Samaria lay between the two Many devout Jews would cross the Jordan and travel through Perea to avoid contact with the Samaritans

So what? Jesus was aware of what was going on around him Jesus had a clear view of his mission Jesus thought and acted strategically Jesus did not give in to Jewish prejudice Jesus carried the gospel to the Jews’ greatest enemies

Jesus conversation with the woman (Verses 5 – 26) Jesus was tired and sat down at the well The woman came to the well at mid-day Jesus engaged her in conversation Jesus knows her need Jesus helps her to see her need Jesus says he is the answer to her need Jesus answered her questions Jesus challenged without condemning Jesus pointed her to true faith The woman left her jar and went to tell her friends

So what? We need to always be ready We need to listen to people and understand what they are thinking and saying We need to have an answer We need to point people to Jesus who is the answer We need to leave behind all that hinders us

Jesus conversation with his disciples (Verses ) His disciples were surprised but said nothing Doing God’s will was Jesus’ food Don’t wait for the harvest The fields are ripe for harvest Different roles – sowing / reaping

So what? Do we see serving God as our sustenance? Are we looking for the opportunity to sow and reap? Are we praying that God will show us where to labour?

The results of Jesus visit to Samaria (Verses 39-42) Many came to see and hear Jesus They saw the effect Jesus had on the woman They listened and believed for themselves They recognised Jesus for who he is The saviour of the world

Today’s “take away” Do we have a clear view of our mission and do we think and plan strategically? Are we always looking for an opportunity to share the gospel? Do we understand how Jesus can meet people’s needs? Are we withholding the gospel from anyone?
