Free Form Abstract Sculpture

What is Free Form Abstract Sculpture? It is a modern style sculpture that has smooth curves and is an abstraction of an object or idea from real life How does this style of sculpture compare to sculpture created by the masters of the Renaissance?

The Renaissance Rebirth of Arts - Move toward more Realistic art - Attention to life-like details - Humanistic ideas - Beginning of Perspective - expanded ideas

The Pieta’ By Michelangelo -Created Made in Marble - Located at St. Peter’s Basilica

Notice how real the features, clothes, and skin look.

Shifts in Art Trends There was a deliberate shift away from the ideals and perfect forms of the Renaissance Over time art trends change rapidly But “expanded ideas” continue

Modern Sculpture -Experimentation of media - Breaking away from traditional ways of making art -Works were unexpected - abstract ideas - unrealistic forms - ideas were expanded

Free Form Sculpture English Sculptor Henry Moore worked in both Abstract and non- objective Styles Choices of Media included wood and bronze Henry Moore Abstract Sculptor,

Henry Moore “The Reclining Figure”

Bronze Sculpture Reaching 16 feet tall, this column-like sculpture twists and turns within its natural setting.

Now get ready to expand your mind and create your own abstract sculpture

Sand down rough edges of block with sandpaper.

Write name on bottom of block with permanent marker.

Bend coat- hanger into a shape that will become your abstract form. BE CREATIVE!!!

Use a small dot of wood glue to secure the coat-hanger into the block.

Stretch knee- high over the coat- hanger to create a form.

Coat the sculpture in liquid starch with a sponge brush several times.

Choose an abstract theme and title for your piece, then paint the sculptures to represent the abstract idea.
