About Water Pollution Water takes up two-thirds of the Earths surface. It is very important to keep it at clean at possible. There are many ways to pollute our water on our Earth. Sometimes we don’t even no we are. Throwing man made objects in to the water is pollution. Bottles, plastic, cans, fishing line, ect. Also throwing things can be harmful to animals. They might think its food, or they might just get caught in to water ever you threw in. Pollution may affect the environment hundreds of miles away from the source.

Marine Dumping Marine dumping is something people have a habit doing. If you out on the boat and your eating a sandwich, when your done you have a plastic bag left over. Not knowing you might just throw it over board. That plastic bag takes 400 years to degrade. Also, plastic bags are VERY harmful to TURTLES. TURTLES think the plastic bags are jellyfish, not knowing it’s a plastic bag the TURTLES eats it and it may cause suffocation which leads to death. Cardboard – Takes 2 weeks to degrade. Newspaper – Takes 6 weeks to degrade. Foam – Takes 50 years to degrade. Styrofoam – Takes 80 years to degrade. Aluminum – Takes 200 years to degrade. Plastic packaging – Takes 400 years to degrade.

Polluting Water By Liquids Never spill oil, or gas in to the ocean, lake, or river. Oil spills make up about 12% of the oil that enters the ocean. The rest come from shipping travel, drains and dumping. Oil spills will harm marine animals such as fish, birds and sea otters and TURTLES.

Nuclear Waste Nuclear waste is sometimes produced from industrial, medical and scientific processes that use radioactive material. Nuclear-fuel reprocessing plants in northern Europe and a big sources of man-made nuclear waste in the surrounding ocean. Refining uranium and thorium are also causes of marine nuclear waste. Waste is also produced in the nuclear fuel cycle.

Sewage and Waste Water Sewage disposal is a major problem in some countries as many people in these areas don’t have sanitary conditions and clean water. Sewage is carried away from the home quickly and hygienically through sewage pipes. Sewage is treated in water treatment plants and the waste is often disposed into the sea. In developed countries, sewage often causes problems when people flush chemical and pharmaceutical substances down the toilet. When people are ill, sewage often carries harmful viruses and bacteria into the environment causing health problems to animals in the ocean.

Fertilizing Your Lawn You can make water polluted by fertilizing your grass. The fertilizer is not meant to designate quickly so when it rains, the excess fertilizer can run off in a storm drain. Then be transported to a water treatment plant. It is very hard to get all the chemicals out of the water.

Help Prevent Water Pollution There are many things you can do to help prevent water pollution. Here are some ideas. _______________________________________________ Be careful about what you throw down your sink or toilet. Don't throw paints, oils or other forms of litter down the drain. Take great care not to overuse pesticides and fertilizers. This will prevent runoffs of the material into nearby water sources. Don't throw litter into rivers, lakes or oceans. Help clean up any litter you see on beaches or in rivers and lakes.
