Teens and Trucks and Defeating Distracted Driving July 2011

Did You Know? Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of Death, worldwide, among young people aged years.

Grim Reality

5,000 Teens Killed Over the past 4 years In passenger car vs heavy truck crashes The passenger vehicle occupants are much more likely to be seriously injured or killed Crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in North America What can we do to help? Provide Awareness, Outreach & Education Training through driver education programs public/private Graduated Driver License Programs

Preventing Highway Deaths More than 40,000 people died on the roadways throughout North America (2009) 33,808 in US, 3,380 of which are large truck related, 322 from buses Both passenger and commercial drivers are part of the problem 73% of large truck crashes are multi-vehicle

Why the Driver? Commercial vehicle and non-commercial driver performance, recognition and decision factors account for approximately 88 percent of the critical reasons for large truck-related crashes 1. In two-vehicle crashes involving large trucks and passenger vehicles, the passenger vehicle was assigned the “critical reason” in 56 percent of the crashes and the large truck in 44 percent 1. Other studies put the passenger car driver percentage in the 70-75% range. 1 Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS), 2006

Operation Safe Driver Mission Improve commercial and non-commercial driver behavior and performance through effective enforcement, education and awareness strategies. Message Improving highway safety for commercial vehicle operations starts with the driver. Highway crashes related to large trucks and buses account for 12 percent of the total highway fatal crashes. Focusing more attention on commercial and non- commercial drivers operating in an unsafe manner around commercial vehicles will save lives.

Operation Safe Driver Objectives Increase CMV traffic enforcement Increase non-CMV traffic enforcement Increase safety belt enforcement Increase driver roadside inspections Increase driver regulatory compliance Implement CMV driver and awareness programs Increase awareness to the motoring public, in particular teens and younger drivers, about safe operations around large trucks and buses
