1 Dangers of Distracted Driving

2 What is Distracted Driving?
Distracted driving is engaging in any activity that diverts your attention away from the primary task of driving including: Cell phone use Adjusting the radio or Ipod Using a navigation system Talking to passengers Eating and drinking Watching a video Grooming Reading (including maps, , etc.)

3 Types of Distractions What are some examples for each category? Are there examples that fit into more than one category?

4 Multi-Tasking Activity

5 Video Clips http://www.distraction.gov/take-action/educators.html

6 Why might new laws not be effective in preventing distracted driving?
How would you explain the behavior of drivers who see others driving while distracted, but do not change their own behavior? What measures do you think states should take to combat distracted driving?

7 Did you know?? Writing or reading a text message takes your eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. At 55 MPH, that’s like driving the length of a football field – blindfolded. If you text while you’re behind the wheel, you’re 20 times more likely to be involved in a crash than a non-distracted driver. Talking on a cell phone reduces the amount of brain activity devoted to driving by 37%.

8 What is at stake? In 2012, 3,328 people were killed, and an estimated additional 421,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. Young people are especially at risk: In 2011, 11% of all drivers under the age of 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crash. This age group has the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted.

9 What is being done? NEW JERSEY Tougher laws Stronger enforcement
Increased public awareness NEW JERSEY Handheld ban for all drivers. Ban on texting for all drivers. Ban on cell phone use (handheld and hands-free) for novice drivers
