How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint Nicolas Lotano

What is Your Carbon Footprint? A carbon footprint can be defined as The total amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and indirectly support human activities. ▫This is usually expressed in tons of carbon dioxide emitted.

Avoid Using Bottled Water Since the water is bottled at one location and shipped to others, creating a huge carbon footprint. This can be avoided by using in home filtration systems and reusable bottles for the water.

Unplug Unused Devices Although they are not powered on, many devices still use energy if they are plugged in. ▫These devices are known as “vampires.” To save a large amount of energy over time, these devices should be unplugged.

Make Your Home Energy Efficient By doing the following, your home’s carbon footprint and energy consumption can be greatly reduced: ▫Make sure all windows close properly. ▫Make sure that your attic is well insulated. ▫Keep your heating and cooling systems well maintained. ▫Switch all of your light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs.

Reduce Try to buy fewer items that emit carbon dioxide into the air as they are produced. Reduce the amount of energy that you consume by turning off lights, keeping your house at a cooler temperature, etc.

Reuse Rather than throwing your plastic shopping bags away, you could use them again the next time. Better yet, you could just avoid plastic bags completely by using a reusable shopping bag. This is just one example of many.

Recycle Recycling can be as easy as putting recyclable items in a bin and bringing it to the curb. Also in NY, recyclable soda and water bottles can be returned at many supermarkets for a 5 cent deposit.
