EDUCE final meeting, Krakow Alkis Bais, AUTh UV Activity Activity leaders: A. Bais, G. Seckmeyer Objectives –Exploitation of UV measurements at selected stations to estimate UV variability including the role of clouds, aerosol and ozone. –Field campaign to provide homogenized UV and all relevant ancillary measurements to achieve quantitative description of UV modulation by aerosols and clouds. –UV predictions using coupled chemistry-climate and radiative transfer models, including simulation of future UV risk scenarios and risk assessment of UV effects.

EDUCE final meeting, Krakow Alkis Bais, AUTh Workpackage 1/4 Re-evaluation of selected UV series and extrapolation to past Partners: FMI, AUTH, SMHI, CHMI, RIVM, DWD Objective: Data preparation to be used in WP2 and WP4 Specific tasks: Re-evaluation and quality control of longest UV records from selected stations Extension of these series in the past for as long as the records of ancillary data allow in each case Use historic records of solar radiation and ozone data to re-construct surface UV at Abisco and Helsinki

EDUCE final meeting, Krakow Alkis Bais, AUTh Workpackage 2/4 Long-term variability of surface UV radiation Partners: AUTH, RIVM, CHMI, SMHI, DWD, NKUA, IGAM, BOKU, UHAN Objective: Calculation of long-term UV changes Specific tasks: Derive long term UV variability at various locations inside and outside Europe associated with significance levels Explore methods for separating the effect of clouds, ozone, aerosols, surface albedo on long-term UV variability Derive a global climatology of aerosols and their optical properties using AERONET data Determine trends in cloudiness from many climatological stations

EDUCE final meeting, Krakow Alkis Bais, AUTh Workpackage 3/4 Improved description of UV modulation by clouds & aerosols Partners: UIIMP, AUTH, UHAN, DLR, NILU, DUTH, UMIST Objective: Focused studies to measure and model spectrally different UV radiation quantities under different aerosol & cloud conditions Specific tasks: To parameterize the aerosol properties from radiation measurements and compare with in situ and remote sensing measurements To investigate the influence of cloud and aerosol properties on UV radiation for different cloud conditions and aerosol loads and types To better quantify the influence of clouds on surface UV irradiance

EDUCE final meeting, Krakow Alkis Bais, AUTh Workpackage 4/4 Future UV predictions / assessment Partners: UHAN, AUTH, RIVM, FMI, DLR Objective: To perform UV predictions with coupled CCMs and RTMs and validate the predictions with measurements Specific tasks: Simulation of future UV scenarios and risk assessments of UV effects using state of the art models Validation of a model hierarchy using UV long-term UV measurements

EDUCE final meeting, Krakow Alkis Bais, AUTh Project schedule Tentative time frame 1 January 2004 – 31 December 2009 Detailed plan exists for first 18 months The project is evaluated every year (GO or NO GO decision at the middle of the project) Reconsideration of tasks (and even partners and funding) is possible after each evaluation Partners with secured national funding can be considered for joining the project Depending on campaign planning, new partners may be needed to join WP3, (internal reallocation of funding may be necessary)
