LATLAT Beam Test Workshop 20th March GLAST Program Beam Test Workshop CU Outer Shipping Container Michele Pinchera

LATLAT Beam Test Workshop 20th March CU OSC - Overview  Purpose and Design Requirements  Overall Design  Design Criteria  Verification  Schedule

LATLAT Beam Test Workshop 20th March CU OSC - Purpose The CU Outer Shipping Container must be capable of transporting and storing the Beam Test CU without damage per the requirements stated in the LAT and MIL applicable documents

LATLAT Beam Test Workshop 20th March CU OSC –Design Requirements Transportation Environment 1.Transport Accelerations vs CU allowable accelerations Analysis assumes applied environmental load occurs simultaneously in all three axes Wire ropes isolators in compression/roll orientation 2.Temperature and Humidity The container shall maintain temperature and humidity requirements as required for the instrument per LAT-MD-00404, "LAT Contamination Control Plan“ GN2 overpressure inside OSC

LATLAT Beam Test Workshop 20th March CU OSC – Design Requirements (continued) CU-ISP Interface Mounting Interface for the ISC interface plate Adequate clearance between CU shipping volume and inside of the OSC cover to allow for: 1.Safe cover removal and installation 2.Predicted dynamic motion of the CU-ISC Transport Truck Payload Limits OSC mass limit = 750kg OSC volume limit (lateral x longitudinal) = 2000 x 3000 mm

LATLAT Beam Test Workshop 20th March CU OSC – Overall Design Cover 2 Breather Valves Humidity Indicator GN2 Connector Cover aligment pin Pressure Gauge GN2 Connector OSC external surface protection: clear anodization Z Y X LAT coordinate ref. system OSC Transport Configuration 2.3 m 1.85 m 1m

LATLAT Beam Test Workshop 20th March CU OSC – Overall Design Base Plate Pallet Lifting Fixture (Steel) O-ring Groove Z Y X LAT coordinate ref. system OSC Lifting Stems OSC Primary Structure

LATLAT Beam Test Workshop 20th March CU OSC - Overall Design (continued) CU-ISC Integration within the OSC Wire Ropes Isolators ISC Interface Plate CU-ISC OSC-ISC Interface Plate Z Y X LAT coordinate ref. system

LATLAT Beam Test Workshop 20th March CU OSC – Design Criteria Base Plate and Pallet act as primary structure carrying load of OSC Loads determination and stresses analysis by means of Hand Calculations and FEA Model for: –Cover –Base plate and Pallet –Lifting Fixture –Interface Plate –Bolted and Welted Joints Mass Properties of ISC Payload –Mass 750 kg, MAX –CG (45 mm, -152 mm, 182 mm) from Interface Plate on respect of OSC CG Factors of Safety –Yield Design Load FS = 3.0 –Ultimate Design Load: FS = 5.0 Structural Margins of Safety Must be Positive

LATLAT Beam Test Workshop 20th March Proof Load Test –Lifting equipment proof test Test items: Base plate, pallet and lifting fixture Test with a dummy load as close as possible to, but not exceeding 125% of the rated load Edgewise Drop (FED STD. 101C) Test items: OSC, ISC, grid simulator, mass simulators Height of drop: 0.23m (9 inches) Leaks Test Test item: cover, base plate Load cycles from min overpressure of 0.05atm (value at INFN integration building, 2m altitude) to max overpressure of 0.2 atm (value at max INFN-CERN route altitude, 1381 m) Static leaks test at min overpressure (<0.1atm). Duration of at least 30min with no leaks CU OSC - Verification dummy 9” GN2 6” sill

LATLAT Beam Test Workshop 20th March CU OSC - Schedule Milestones:  Ready for Proof Tests by May 15  Ready for Integration by May 22
