EDUCATION Black professors hold less than 5% of faculty positions. Less than 5% of the K-12 teaching force is black. About 85% of this group is centered in urban areas. Of all the doctoral degrees awarded in 1990, just 3.5% went to black men and women. The attrition rate of black university students at many prestigious universities is greater than 60%. Most NCAA universities refuse to release attrition rate for athletes. An NCAA study showed that nearly 75% of Division I black athletes failed to graduate. While black students represent 16 % of all public school students, they make up nearly 40% of those classed as learning disabled. There are more black men in jail than in college. CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN PENNSYLVANIA

RACIAL PROFILING A black Milwaukee driver is seven times as likely to be stopped by city police as a white resident driver, a Journal Sentinel analysis of nearly 46,000 traffic stops has found. Similarly, Milwaukee police pulled over Hispanic city motorists nearly five times as often as white drivers, according to the review, which took into account the number of licensed drivers by race. Police also searched black drivers at twice the rate of whites, but those searches didn't lead to higher rates of seized weapons, drugs or stolen property. The review found that the disparities spanned all seven police districts. The two with the greatest racial discrepancies - Districts 1 and 6 - have the lowest crime rates, and both have predominantly white populations. Read the full article here. Read about the TSAs open practice of racial & ethnic profiling in airports.

RACIAL PROFILING Who gets credit cards may be a matter of black and white Study: Getting credit cards is easier if you live in white neighborhoods Is it 'redlining'? The study, titled "Credit Card Redlining," is unlike most previous lending studies in that it controls for credit histories and credit scores. That means it compared people with identical risk profiles and payment histories and found significant differences based on the racial makeup of their neighborhoods. Redlining is a term that describes the illegal practice of denying banking, housing, insurance or other services in certain areas or communities based on race. Decades ago, lenders were said to draw a red line on a map around areas targeted for differential treatment, hence the term redlining. Credit Card Redlining Read the full article here.
