SPANISH MISSIONS 1682-1821

What 2 things that you would keep in mind when purchasing the land? Just imagine that you and your family have decided to purchase a piece of land in your region What 2 things that you would keep in mind when purchasing the land? How would you let others know that this property belongs to you? Would you be upset if someone came in and took your land?

That is what the Spaniards did when they came to Texas That is what the Spaniards did when they came to Texas. How do you think the Native Americans felt? What did the Spaniards use to get control of the land?

We are going to study why the Spaniards used the missions system to gain control of Texas. It is important to know where these missions were built and why the locations of these missions are vital to our history today.

Spanish Missions 1682 - Corpus Christi de la Ysleta 1690- San Francisco de los Tejas 1690- El Santisimo Nombre de Maria 1716- Nacogdoches 1718- San Antonio de Valera (Alamo) 1722- La Bahia 1757- Santa Cruz de San Saba

MAPS Label the Missions Label the regions Label the Native Tribes Include El Camino Real in map

What regions can you find missions in What regions can you find missions in? What would these regions offer the missions? (review geography) Which Native Americans groups were affected by missions? Why were there not more missions established in the eastern part of Texas?

SPAIN BUILDS MISSIONS Feels threaten by France-needs to control the land- GOALS Spread Christianity by converting Native Americans to Christianity Teach Spanish customs to the Native Americans & lead to adopt the Spanish way of life. Build new settlements Establishes & strengthen ownership over Texas by colonizing the New World

Definitions Missions-a settlement set up in Indian territory. Friars (Catholic affiliated) lead the missions Self-sufficient Invited the Native Americans to live with them Taught them Christianity, language, customs, and farming methods Goal to turn Native Americans into royal Spanish citizens; assumed it would take 10 years and then move on to est. a new mission

Presidio- a fort that protected the missions from unfriendly Indians & helped control the Indians who lived in the missions.

Villa: located between a mission and a presidio. It was a small town around a mission and a presidio that provided goods and services.

Daily Life Recruited Native Americans Religious instruction Indians lived and worked on missions Ranching and farming Craft work like sewing, blacksmith, soap & bricklaying Choice: food & protection from other tribes Indians were controlled & punished Religious instruction Taught the Christian faith

Problems with the system Disease Indian dislike the mission life Too few Native Americans to do the work Rejected it Retain own culture (hunting and ceremonies) Soldier had little pay Different uses of the missions Protection - learn work skills food

Decline France’s threat was no longer due to the end of the French & Indian War; Spanish spread to thin across Texas; presidio’s not able to protect missions from Indian attacks. Native Americans did not want to be converted. Money, poor supplies, treatment of Indians Missions closed, failing to settle Texas
