In the English language... There are 8 basic parts of speech: 1.Nouns 2.Verbs 3.Pronouns 4.Adjectives 5.Adverbs 6.Conjunctions 7.Prepositions 8.Interjections Every word in a sentence has a job to do, a role to play… Knowing what these “jobs” are will help you learn vocabulary, develop more efficient reading skills, and improve your writing!

Noun: a person, place, thing, idea, or quality Person: Mr. Jones likes to eat spinach. Place: Rome is an ancient city. Thing: I will water the plant when I get home. Idea: She looked at him with love. Quality: Patience is a great virtue.

Verb: shows action or state of being Action: He ran through the forest. State of being: Olivia is my best friend at school. State-of-being verbs: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been

Pronoun: takes the place of a noun Juan was studying diligently for the mid-term exam because he wanted to do well on it. This is the pumpkin I want to carve for Halloween. Diana found a rose by her door and wondered who * had given it to her. * does not have an actual antecedent in the sentence

Adjective: describes a noun The beautiful woman picked a bouquet of wildflowers. I brought ten dollars to school to buy a vocabulary book. Adjectives answer these questions: Which one? What kind? How many?

Don’t forget about the ARTICLES! The 3 articles: a, an, & the For the purposes of the eight parts of speech, these may be classified as adjectives, because they are used to modify nouns. Give me the pencil.

Adverb: describes a verb The little girl skipped happily through the park. The student completely finished her homework before dinner time. Adverbs answer these questions: How? When? Where? To what degree?

Conjunctions: words that join words, phrases or sentences Mark and Sophie love to cook. You should get to class on time, or you will be counted tardy. I am happy because I had a great weekend. The game has been cancelled, since the field was flooded by rain.

Preposition: A word or phrase that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence. Breakfast is on the table. The remote was under the pillow. These are some common prepositions: forontoup atunderabove toward withbetweeninbehind fromuponintooff

Interjections: expressive words Wow, you knocked that ball out of the park! Oh, I forgot! Huh, what did you say? Ah, now I understand!

You’re done…for now! I would make sure those notes were in the Language section of my binder. Seriously.
