Anatomy The Lower Leg and Foot

Why Study Anatomy ?? Increase knowledge of the body systems and how it relates to salon services. Improves performance for better services, with a understanding of muscles and bones. Helps recognize changes from the norm.

Five Tissues of the Body Connective Tissue- provides protection, support and binds other tissues of the body together. Epithelial Tissue- protects body surfaces. The top layer of skin is epidermis. Lining of the heart and respiratory organs are included.

Cont. Tissues of the Body Liquid Tissue- Hormones, blood, lymph and carries food and waste products through out the body. Muscular Tissue – Moves and contracts body muscles. Nerve Tissue- sends messages to and from the brain and controls body functions.

Connective Tissue Examples of connective tissues: Bones Cartilage Tendons Ligaments Adipose (Fat tissue)

Epithelial Tissues Skin Layer (Surface) Tissues are closely packed. Flat cells No blood vessels are present. Replaces damaged cells.

Liquid Tissues Carries food and nourishments to the body by way of blood and lymph. Hormones and waste products are also carried by liquid tissue.

Muscular Tissue Gives the body ability to contract and move. Skeletal – (Voluntary Muscle) Smooth - (Involuntary Muscle) Cardiac - (Heart muscle)

Nerve Tissue Composed of neurons Send and receives messages from the brain Coordinates and controls all body functions

Bones of the Lower Leg Patella- Knee cap Tibia- Larger of two bones below knee Fibula-Smallest of two bones below knee Tarsals-7 small bones of the foot, above metatarsals. Phalanges-3 in each toe, two in the big toe
