Two food items for both the coastal and plateau groups

Salmon and whales, buffalo and deer

It’s why there are more coastal tribes than plateau tribes

On the coast their food source comes to them; on the plateau they have to move to find food, so they are more spread out

This is where you are most likely to have the best luck when salmon fishing as a Native American

Just below a waterfall or rapids, where fish congregate

It is the main reason for a potlatch ceremony

Gift-giving; a redistribution of wealth; to show someone respect by giving them your most prized possession

These four methods of transportation of people and goods were the most common by Native Americans

Walking, horseback, dugout canoes, travois

These four reasons are why Europeans and Americans explored the Pacific Northwest

To find the western entrance to the northwest passage, to find gold, to dominate the Native Americans, and to spread religion

These four nations explored the Pacific Northwest

Spain, England, Russia, and the United States (remember, we didn’t own it yet!)

What is the demarcation line?

The line that Pope Clement divided North and South America along, between Spain and Portugal

It’s the name of the largest land purchase, the president who bought it, the country and leader he bought it from, and the reason it was sold for so cheap! Whew! 5 Answers!

Louisiana Purchase; Thomas Jefferson; France; Napoleon; He needed money for wars in Europe and had given up hopes of French settlement there

They are the four goals of the Lewis and Clark expeditions

Map the Louisiana Purchase, make contact with the Native Americans, record the plants and animals they found, and find a route to the Pacific

It is two reasons why the Pacific Northwest was such a great place for the fur trade, besides “there were a lot of furry animals here”

Rivers provided access to the interior; Native tribes cooperated and participated in the trade

Name the most important fur pelt, what it was used for, and three places it was in high demand

Beaver, made into hats, London, Paris, Asia

These are four of the fur trading companies that were located in or had bases in the Pacific Northwest

Pacific Fur Company; Hudson’s Bay Company; Rocky Mountain Fur Company; North West Fur Company

It is the most successful trading post in the northwest, and it’s leader

Fort Vancouver; John McLoughlin

This grizzled mountain man discovered the source of the Columbia river. Man, were his arms tired!

David Thompson

It’s the main reason that Native Americans might have been confused by missionaries

The missionaries taught both Catholic and Protestant beliefs

It is the name for a native healer and spiritual guide; the natives often referred to missionaries as them

Shaman

It’s the name for the native religion, and the biggest difference between them and Christians

Animism; They believe that all living things have souls, whereas Christians believe only humans have souls

They are probably the most important missionaries in the northwest (also name the tribe that killed them!)

Marcus and Narcissa Whitman; Cayuse Tribe

It is the name of the people who started a mission in Lapwai, and the name of the tribe there

Spaldings; Nez Perce Tribe

It’s the town that the Oregon Trail started in

Independence, Missouri

These three reasons are why people came out on the Oregon Trail

Start a new life, create utopian societies, cheap land, leave hardship behind

This group of people had more to do with the establishment of the Oregon Trail than anyone else

Explorers/ fur traders

These three hazards might have made your journey difficult

Sickness, starvation, snake bites/animals, harsh weather, hostile native groups

It’s the name for a mass migration– Moses also had one…

Exodus

It’s what you carve a canoe out of, and what you carve it with

Dug out of trees with an adze

This town is at the mouth of the Columbia River

Astoria, Oregon

This is the name of the meeting place that happened once a year for mountain men to sell furs and buy supplies, and they partied it up a bit too

Rendezvous

This Brit was the first Englishman to sail along the Oregon coastline and the first Brit to circumnavigate the world. He was also a privateer and pirate in his day. What a busy guy!

Sir Francis Drake

It’s the name of the blue- flowered root gathered and eaten by most Plateau tribes– they still gather it today!

Camas Root

Make your wager

Name the five migration groups that came into the Pacific Northwest, in order, then argue which had the greatest impact on the settlement of the area– give two reasons they they are the most important

Native people, explorers, fur traders, missionaries, Oregon Pioneers
